DRAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 653,658, dated July 17, 1900. Application filed March 1'7, 1900. Serial No. 9 ,096. (No model.)
known as drags, which are used for transporting heavy objects without the trouble of suspending them from wheeled trucks; and it has for its object to produce a device of this kind which will be of great strength and which may be renewed or repaired with but trivial expense; and it consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement of parts of a drag, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, in which the same reference-numerals indicate corresponding parts in each of the views in which they occur, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a drag embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the same. Fig; 3 is a perspective detail view of the front portion of the drag.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, 1 indicates the head or front portion of myimproved drag, which is preferably made of steel or iron, the front portion of which is contracted toward a point and curved or bent upward in the form of a sled-runner, and the rear portion is flat and perforated, as at 2. The lower surface of the head, excepting where it is perforated, is perfectly flat and curved, so as to ride freely over the ground and to pass over any obstructions which it might meet in its forward movement. The upper surface of the head is provided with Vertical flanges 3 and 4, one of which, 3, extends entirely around the edge, except at the rear, and the other ones, 4, intersect each other at the center of the head, one of them extending longitudinally of the head at the center and the other one extending transversely across the head. The flange at the forward end is of greater thickness or area in cross-section than the other flanges, and the front of the head is provided with a ring 5 or other means of attaching the drafting mechanism thereto.
Fitting between the flanges at the rear of the head is the forward end of the bottom 6, which is preferably formed from two wooden planks, the rear ends of which are secured together by means of a cross-piece 7; The center rib or flange of the head is so narrow that when it is fitted between the two planks the space between the planks is so small'as to make the drag substantially solid throughout, and, if desired, the adjacent edges of the planks may be slightly out out for the reception of the flange, so as to permit the remaining portion of the edges to abut against each other. The perforations through the head are preferably made angular and flaring toward the under surface, so that the bolt-heads by means of which the planks are secured to the head can be made angular and slightly tapered, so as to fit in said perforations without requiring them to project below the surface, the thickness of the head being suflicient to give the bolts a good strong support or hearing. When constructed in this manner, it will be seen that my improved drag can be cheaply constructed and that it will possess very great strength and that it may be renewed or repaired very easily. As the rear portion of the drag is preferably made from wood to better hold the stones or other substances which may be loaded upon it, the facility with which this portion of the drag may be renewed is of considerable importance. The formation of the rear portion of the head for the reception of the forward ends of the planks adds greatly to the strength and rigidity of the parts, and especially in turning or pulling the drag laterally, when the flanges of the head will engage with the ends of the planks and assist the bolts in holding the planks in position. The flanges will also add to the strength of the head itself, and thus permit of the head being made of less thickness than would be required without the flanges. By making the heads of the bolts angular they will be prevented from turning when it is desired to replank the head if the bolts should have become rusted or battered and are diflicult to remove.
Although Ihave shown what I consider to be the most desirable form for constructing my drag, yet I reserve to myself the right to make such changes and alterations therein as will come within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In a drag, the combination, with an upwardly-curved head, the rear portion of which is provided with countersunk angular perforations and the upper surface of the head is provided with a flange extending around the edges except at the rear, and the central portion is provided with two intersecting flanges one of which extends longitudinally of the
