JAMES C. BROYLES, 0F COLUMBUS, MISSISSIPPI.
CHOKE ATTACHMENT FOR GUN-BARRELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 653,613, dated July 10, 1900.
Application filed A,pril17, 1900. Serial No, 13.255. (No model.)
To all whom it' may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES C. BROYLES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Lowndes and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Choke Attachment for Gun-Barrels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to Shotguns, and has for one object to provide au improved choke attachment therefor whereby the amount of taper at the muzzle of the gun-barrel may bey conveniently adjusted to control the concentration and scattering of the discharged shot. It is furthermore designed to provide improved means for mounting the device upon the gun-barrel, so that it may be in convenient reach of the forward hand which grasps the gun-barrel in order that it may be operated without removing the gun from the shoulder, and finally to provide means for limiting the device to a plurality of predetermined adjustment-s.
Vith these and other objects in view the present-invention consists iu the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanyingdrawings, and particularlypointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure lis a side elevation of a magazine-shotgun having the present invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional View taken through the muzzle of the gun-barrel. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the muzzle of the gun-barrel. Fig. 4 is a'detail `perspective view of the adjusting'attachment. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the cam-shaped stop for limiting the adjustment of the attachment.
Corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings are designated by like characters of reference.
with a plurality of longitudinal incisions, thereby forming a plurality of substantially fine or thin spring-tongues 4, which are designed to be drawn inwardly to vary the diameter and the taper of the muzzle, and thereby adjust the degree of choke.
Slidable longitudinally upon the gun-barrel is a tube or sleeve 5, having the outer end 6o portion of its bore tapered, so that its smallest diameter is at the outer end of the sleeve, and by drawing the sleeve rearwardly or toward the stock of the gun the spring-tongues 4 will be drawn inwardly to increase the taper 65 of thebore of the gun-barrel at the muzzle thereof, and by moving the sleeve outwardly a reverse adjustment of the tongues and the bore of the gun will be had. It will of course bc understood that the smallest diameter of 7o the bore of the sleeve will be substantially the same or a trifie greater than that of the gun-barrel, so that when the sleeve is at its outer limit and the spring-tongues assume their normal position the bore of the sleeve may not interfere with the discharge of shot.
To conveniently operate the slidable sleeve, there is provided a pair ot' diametrically-opposite jaws which are duplicates in form and are located at'opposite sides of the gun- 8o barrel. The forward end of each jaw is rigidly connected to the rear end of the sleeve by means of any suitable fastening and is curved or bowed downwardly to fit between the magazine 2 and the gun-barrel, the rear 85 end of the jaw being bent inwardly to form a rounded finger-piece 8 for the convenient operation of the sleeve and to prevent injury to the iingers of the hand which operates the loading-slide a, that is commonly mounted 9o upon the magazine. Intermediate of the opposite ends of the jaws there is a connecting cross-bar 9, which holds the jaws together and is slidable in the slot or space between the barrel and the magazine.
In order that the forward movement of the sleeve may be stopped at certain predetermined limits, there is provided a stop ring or collar 10, which is fit-'ted to turn upon the-forward end of the magazine and is held against roo forward displacement by the flanged closureplug 11, which is commonly provided for the forward end of the magazine. The rear edge 2 of this collar or ring' is inclined, so as to form a cam-face for engagement with vthe shoulder 13, formed integrally with the rear end of the sleeve, whereby the outward movement of the latter is limited. By turning the Stop-collarnpon the magazine di Herent points of the cam edge will be presented for engagement by the stop-shoulder on the sleeve, and
thus a great variety of limitations may be provided for the sleeve. The rearward movement of the sleeve is limited "by means of a stop 14, which is .located in the path of the rear end of the sleeve and the shoulder 13 and in the present application of the device isformed by the clip, which embraces both the gun-barrel and the magazine to connect the latter to the former.
Although the present device has been shown and described ,as applied to a magazine-gun,
wherein the magazine forms a support for the stop ring or collar, yet it will be understood that any suitable longitudinally-disposed support may be employed.
I From the foregoing description it will be apparent that the present invention provides simple and efficient means for adjusting the choke of a gun-barrel, and the device may be readily applied to a gun without changing jaws extending rearwardly from the sleeve, lo-
cated at opposite sides of the barrel, and forming-,a finger-piece for adjusting the sleeve.
3. The combination with a gun-barrel, having anI exteriorly-smooth muzzle, provided witha plurality of longitudinal incisions,I of an inteiorly-smooth sleeve, slidableupon the muzzlefand having a tapered bore,'which decreases in diameter toward the outer end thereof. /f-
4. The combination with a gun-barrel hav'-v ing .a plurality of longitudinal incisions in the muzzle thereof, of a tapered sleeve slidable upon the muzzle, and an adjustable stop lto limit the forward movement of the sleeve.
5. The combination with a gun-barrel hav1 ing a plurality of longitudinal incisions in the muzzle thereof, of a tapered sleeve slidable upon the muzzle, and provided with a stopshoulder, a support at one side of the barrel 6o and a rotatable stop mounted upon the support and for en gage men t by the stop-shoulder.
6. The combination with a gun-barrel having a plurality of longitudinal incisions in the muzzle thereof, of a tapered sleeve slidable upon the muzzle, and provided with a stop-shoulder, a support at one side of the barrel, and a'ca'm-shaped ring or collar, which is rotatable upon the support, and has its cam edge located in the path of the stop- 7o shoulder on the sleeve.
7. The combination with a shotgun, having a barrel which is provided with a plurality of longitudinal incisions in the muzzle thereof, and alongitudinal support spaced at one side of the barrel, of a tapered sleeve slidable upon the muzzle of the barrel, a pair of opposite' jaws connected to the rear or inner end of the sleeve, and having their opposite ends received between the support and the barrel, a 8o stop-shoulder provided upon the rearend of the sleeve, and a rotatable cam-shaped ring or collar mounted upon the support and having its cam-face located in the path of the stop-shoulder on the sleeve. 8,5
8. The combination-with a gun-,barrel having a plurality of longitudinal incisions in the muzzle thereof, and a longitudinal tubular magazine spaced at one side of the barrel,
of a tapered sleeve slidable upon the muzzle, 9o 'a pair of opposite jaws connected to the rear end of the sleeve and having their rear ends received within the space between the magazine and the barrel, an intermediate crossbar connecting the jaws and slidable between the magazine and the barrel, a stop-shoulder upon the rear end of the sleeve and located between the barrel and the magazine, and a collar or ring rotatable upon the outer end of the magazine and having its .inner end in- 1o .clined or beveledto form a camedge located in the path of the stop-shoulder on the. sleeve. In testimony that I claim .the foregoing as 4my own I have hereto affixed my-signature lin
