Description

uiten tatrs iatcnt @ffice IMPROVED LIFE-PRESERVER.
@in Stlphnle refrtteh tu in tlgsse Enters in'teut mit linking part nttlgt terme,
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GQNCERN:
Be it known that I, J. SHAW, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful improvements in Life-Preservers, and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings hereinafter' referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and vprinciples of my said improvements, by which my invention may be distinguished from all others ot' a similar class, together with such parts as I claim, and desire to'have secured to me by.Letters Patent.
'lbc present invention consists in combinin g with the ordinary lifeprescrvers,.or those which are constructed to encircle and to be applied to' the body of the person, one'or more receptacles adapted to the reception and holding of water and food for the sustenance of life while the person wearing vsdch preservers is'aiioat or in the water; these receptacles being constructed in such manner that the water in the one can be drunk without admitting the surrounding water, and the food in the other can be similary removed for beingeaten. In the accompanying plate of drawings my improvements in life-preservers are illustrated- Figure I being a plan or top view of thesame.
Figure 2, a section, taken in the plane of the line n; rv, tig. '1.
Figui-e3, a view showing the preserver upon a persons body.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A in the drawings represents a life-prserver gf the ordinary and common forni, suitable for being applied to the body ol' a person, straps B and buckles C being provided for such purpose. or boxes attached to prcserrer A, one at each end, cach ot vwhich receptacles is to be made in any suitable munnerto be watcr-tight. One, D, of these receptacles is for the reception of water, or other liquid suitable for'drinking purposes, and for drinking the same therefrom a tube, F, is provided, with a sditable mouth and stopper, und :1n air-tube, G,- for the admission of air to the interior of the receptacle, extending to thc bottom of the water receptacle, so as to enable thc water to bc entirely removed therefrom. The other receptacle, E, is for food, and for the insertion and removal of the same therefrom, an opening, H, is made in the upper end, foi-which opening a stopper or plug, I, is provided to stop the same. YI, a flexible or elastic bag, secured to food receptaclcut the end where the food is to be removed, which bag provided wit-h an elastic, or other means suitable to cause it to tightly grasp and .enclose about the hand as it is inserted therein to reach the stopper of the receptacle for removing it, whereby, as is obvious, theentrancc of the water surrounding the life-preserrer and its food receptacle is, entirely prevented while the food is being removed, an'advantage of the utmost importance. K,a stopper for the' mout-h of the iexible bagJ, which stopper, as wellas all the other Stoppers used about the lifc-preservcr embraced in the present invention, is to be attached to the sume, so that whether in or out of place it cannot beilost.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The life-preserver, constructed as described, consisting of the water and food receptacles D E attached' to the portion the water receptacle D provided with the air-tube G and drinkingprovided' with the opening H, closed with the plug I and the elastic bag J purpose specified.
D and E, two receptacles -piecc the drinking-tube at its mouth, is
tube F, the food receptacle ,substantially as described for the JEHYLEMAN SHAW.
