ROBERT D. JAMISON, OF CAMERON,`MISSOURI.
LAM P-CHIIVINEY..
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 652,779, dated July 3, 190.0.
Application filed October 21, 1899.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT D. J AMIsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cameron, in the county of Clinton and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Lamp- Chimney, of vwhich the following is a specification.
rlhe invention relates to improvements in lamp-chimneys.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction'of lamp-chimneys and to enable the same to be more securely interlocked in engagement with a burner and to afford ventilation at the base of the chimney to increase the brilliancy of the light.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully describedpillustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lamp-chimney constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly' in section, illustrating the manner of interlocking the chimney with a burner.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings.
l designates a lamp-chimney provided Aat its lower edge with a bead or rib 2, consisting of an exterior enlargement and provided with a scalloped lower edge, forming a series of notches or recesses 3 and providing ventilating openings or spaces when the chimney is arranged on a burner 4, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings, to
permit air to pass from the exterior of the chimney to the interior thereof to provide complete combustion, whereby the size and brilliancy of the light are increased. The chimney rests uponthe proj ection'formed by the recesses or notches 3, and it is provided at intervals above the annular rib or bead 2 with ornamental bosses or enlargements 5, which may be of any desired conguration. The bosses or enlargements 5, which are located directly above therib or bead 2, are provided with central vertical recessesor grooves 6,
Serial No. 734,366. (No model.)
having inclined rear walls, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings, and adapted to receive the resilient arms or springs 7 of thel burner 4t, whereby the chimney is rmly interlocked with the burner and is prevented from becoming displaced. .The inclined rear or inner walls of the vertical grooves 6 conform to the general inclination of the resilientarms or springs 7 of the burner and are securely clamped by the same, and the side walls formed by the said grooves G engage the edges of the arms or springs 7 and prevent the chimney from rotating or moving laterally. By this construction the chimney is firmly clamped on the burner and is prevented from tilting laterally in either direction., so that there is no liability of it accidentally falling off or breaking.
The interlocking action of the springs of the burner of the chimney is sufficiently great to retain the chimney on the burner, even Vthough the parts be inverted. The rib and the ornamental enlargements at the base of the chimney increase the strength and durability of the same, and as the Ventilatingopenings permit the passage of air to the exterior of the chimney there is no liability of the lower portions of the same becoming unequally heated, and the expansion of the parts will be gradual and uniform, so that the chimney will not break by reason of its increased thickness.
The chimney, as will be readily understood, may be of any desired coniiguration, and the upper edge may be beaded or ornamented in any manner, if desired.
It will be seen that the chimney is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, that it provides Ventilating-openings which permit air to passto its interior, and that the brilliancy of the light will be increased, owing to the complete combustion. It will also be apparent that the durability and life of a chimney will be greatly increased, as it is iirmly interlocked with the burner and cannot accidentally fall therefrom and break.
What is claimed isl A lamp-chimney provided Von its. exterior with enlargements or bosses having upwardlyextending grooves forming inclined rear Walls to be engaged by the springs or arms of a burner, and provided with side Walls adapted to engage the side edges of sueh springs or arms, whereby the chimney is held against the burner and is prevented from movin g lateraly, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT D. JAMISON.
