To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALBAN ANDREN,a citizen of the United States, residing at 53 Lothrop street, Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mailing-Envelops, of which the followingis a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in mailingen velops adapted for the transmission through the mails of printed matters, circulars, merchandise, &c., which by their nature require that one end of the envelop shall be so arranged as to be readily opened for the purpose of examining the contents of such envelop by the postal examiners, and this my invention is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein 1 Figure 1 represents a rear view of the improved envelop, Showing one end closed and the gummed flap at the opposite end open previous to inclosing the articles and sealing the same Within the envelop. Fig. 2 represents a cross-section on the line 2 2 shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a plan View of the envelopblank, showing the flexible wire-netting closer located in position on the inside of said blank before the side flaps of the envelop are gummed together. Fig. i represents a plan view of said envelop-blank, showing the end flap closed over the flexible wire-netting and gummed to the interior of the main portion of said blank; and Fig. 5 represents a perspective view of Fig. 4.

Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.

The envelop-blank is preferably made as a single piece, composed of the main front portion A, having preferably made integral with it the side flaps B B and gummed end flap O, as is common in devices of this kind. Opposite to the gummed flap C is preferably made integral with the body portion A. the end flap D, as shown. On the inside of the end portion of the main part A, I locate a piece of perforated metal Wire gauze or netting E, which is made to extend upon a portion of the interior of the end flap D, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, 4t, and 5. The end flap D is preferably creased on the line (1 (shown in Fig. 3) and bent and doubled over upon the wire gauze or netting E and interior of the main portion A of the envelop, as shown in Figs. 2, a, and 5, and glued or similarly attached to the interior of the portion A, so as to cover the wire gauze or netting, as shown in said Figs. 2, 4, and 5. After the end flap D has thus been attached to the main portion A, with the wire-gauze inclosed and concealed between said parts, I attach or gum the overlapping edges of the side flaps B B together, as shown in Fig. 1. I then close that end of the envelop where the Wiregauze E is located by bending the latter over and upon the back of the envelop, as represented in Figs. 1 and 2, thus causing such end of the envelop to be closed and held closed by the said wire gauze or netting E in such a manner as to enable it to be opened for inspection, &c., at any time simply by bending the overlapping portion of the wire gauze or netting backward, as shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2, and aftersuchinspection, 850., the said end of the envelop may be again secu rely closed simply by bending the outer end of the wire gauze or netting onto and against the back of the envelop, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

In practice I prefer to manufacture the improved envelop for the trade as shown in Fig. 1-namely, with its rear Wire-gauze-reenforced end closed and with its gummed end flap 0 open.

In mailing or sending goods or merchandise itis onlynecessaryto insert such through the open end where the flap 0 is located, after which Said flap may be moistened and sealed, as usual, leaving the opposite wiregauze-reenforced end flap to be opened and closed from time to time, as may be desired, either for examination by the postal authorities or for the discharge in whole or part of the contents of the envelop.

By the use of wire gauze or nettingas a re enforcer and closing medium of the open end of the envelop I am able to construct an envelop of a very light weight and in such a manner that the contents thereof may read ily be examined simply by opening the wire gauze-reenforced flap. The said wire-gauze- 'for instance, seeds, grain, or othersmall and detached articles-from dropping out of the envelop during handling or transmission by mail or otherwise.

The invention is very simple in its construction and operation, is very light, and affords a ready-closing device that may at any time be opened and closed by the hands and fingers alone without the need of any special tools for the purpose.

What I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim is 1. The herein-described envelop consisting of a blank portion A having an integral end flap D folded over and cemented to said portion A to provide a pocket, and a strip of foraminous metal located in said pocket, a portion of said pocket and contained strip of metal being adapted to be folded over upon the exterior of the envelop at one end to hold such end closed, for the purpose specified.

The herein-described envelop consisting of a blank portion A, having an end flap D, folded over and attached to the said portion A, to provide a pocket, and a strip of foraminous metal located in said pocket, a portion of said pocket and contained strip of metal being adapted to be folded over upon the exterior of the envelop at one end to hold such end closed,- for the purpose specified.

The herein-described envelop consisting of a blank portion A, having an integral end flap D,folded over and cemented at its sides and end to the portion A, to provide a closed pocket, and a strip of wire-netting located in said pocket, a portion of the pocket and contained strip of wire netting being adapted to be folded over upon the exterior of the envelop at one end to hold such end closed.

5. An envelop consisting of a blank por tion A, having an integral flap D, at one end thereof, a portion of said flap being folded over on a line intermediate its ends and secured to the said blank to provide a pocket, a portion of which forms an end extension for the envelop, and a strip of wire-netting located in said pocket and projecting into the end extension, said end extension and contained strip of wire-gauze being adapted to be folded over upon the exterior of the envelop at one end to hold such end closed.

6. An envelop consisting of a blank portion A, having integral side flaps B, B, and end flaps O, D, said flap D, being folded over and seen red to the blank portion A, to provide a pocket, and a strip of wire fabric located in said pocket, a portion of said pocket and con tained strip of fabric being adapted to be folded over upon the envelop at one end to hold such end closed.

7. The herein-described envelop having an extension-flap at one end, and a strip of Wire gauze or netting carried by the envelop and overlapping the extension-flap, said flap and overlapping part of the wire-netting being adapted to be folded over uponthe exterior of the envelop at one end to hold such end closed.

8. The herein-described envelop consisting of a blank portion A, having integral side flaps B, B, secured together, and normallyopen end flaps O, D, and a strip of wire-net ting located within the envelop at one end only and having a portion thereof extending over onto the said flap D, said latter-named flap and extended portion of the wire fabric being adapted to be folded over upon the exterior of the envelop at one end to hold such end closed.
