IMPROVEMENT IN ROSE ENGINE LATHES.

Be it known that I, THOMAS LIPHATT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Rose Engine Lathes; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, makinga portion of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of la lathe constructed according to my invention, taken in the line :v :z: of fig. 3.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same taken in the line y y of tig. 3. Figure 3 is a plan view of the same. Similar letters of referencerindicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
This invention consists in a swinging frame suspended from a sliding stock and carrying the tracing-pim in combination with a moving pattern and with the tool-box which carries the graving tool, whereby the mcvements of the said graving tool may be guided by the movements of the pattern, at the same time that it may be pressed by the operator or attendant-against the surface of the article to be engraved. The invention further consists in certain novel arrangements of parts whereby the craving tool and the mechanism operating the same may be adjusted in any required position, with reference to the mandrel which carries the watch-case or other article, and whereby the lateral movement of the graving tool required to enablethe said tool to follow the outline of the pattern may be readily and conveniently communicated thereto.
To enable others to understand the construction and operation ofmy invention I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A shows the bed or main frame of th'e lathe, and B the rotating mandrel or shaft which carries the article to be turned, the said article being secured upon the inner end of the said shaft through the agency of a chuck, a, or by any other suitable means. The aforesaid shaft or mandrel B receives a rotary motion by any appropriate means, as, for instance, and as represented in the drawings, by a pulley, 6, secured thereto, and operated by a belt, c, from a double'grooved pulley, d, which is in turn rotated by abelt, e, from a pulley,f, upon the driving-shaft g. The forward portion of the frame A is formed with parallel guides or Ways z., upon which is situated a sliding bed, C, which sustains an adjustable frame, D, which is secured thereon by means of a bolt, z', which passes through a slot, a, formed in the bottom plate 7' thereof, andthrough a hole in the sliding-bed c, the said bolt being tightened by means of a nut, situated underneath the sliding-bed C, as shown in figs. 1 and 2. Secured near oneof the lateral extremities of the aforesaid adjustable frame D, at the back part thereof, is a vertical standard, A', to which, by means of a horizontal pivot, is attached a rotating disk, E, upon the front surface of which is formed or engraved the design which it is desired to reproduce upon the watch-case or other article, the said disk'thus constituting the moving pattern by which the graving tool is actuated, as will be hereinafter fully set'forth. The disk or pattern E is rotated at a suitable speed by means of -a belt passing over its periphery from a pulley, k, situated upon the same shaft as the pulley ci. The top plate lof the adjustable frame D is made of dove-tail form in its cross-section, in order that the block F placed thereon, being formed with a suitable dove-tail groove in its under side, may be secure-ly attached thereto, and at the same time be capable of moving or sliding thereon, such sliding movement of the block F being obtained by means of the horizontal screw G, thc ends of which work in suitable bearings formed in the lateral extremities of the adjustable frame D, and which passes through a nut or female screw formed in a bar, m, which is situated underneath the tcp plate Z of the adjustable frame D with its ends secured to those of the block F, the said screw G being turned by a crank, 7L', attached to one end thereof, as shown in fig. 3, cr by any other appropriate means. H represents a pivoted block which supports the tool-box I, and which carries the graving tool, as will be presently set forth, the said pivoted block H being pivoted at its real-most end to the corresponding end of the block F by means of a vertical bolt or pivot, as shown in dotted lines at c', in gs. 1 and 3, and is furnished at its upper side with a longitudinally moving tool-box, I, which works in a broad dove-tail groove formed in the aforesaid upper surface of the pivoted block H, and has formed upon its front end a knob or handle, d. The inner or rearmost end of this tool-box is formed with an upwardly extending portion, e', into which the graving tool J is keyed or otherwise secured, the cutting point of the said tool being formed at the rear or inner extremity thereof. The sliding-block F has attached to one of its sides a verticalY stock or arm` r, the upper end of which is furnished with abracket, s, in which is pivoted a. suspended swinging frame, K. Near the lower edge of' this swinging frame, at one end lof the same, is attached a rearwardly projecting tracing-pin, u, which is brought in Contact With the front or engraved surface of the disk or pattern E, and is intended to follow the outline or design engraved upon the said pattern, in order to guide the graving tool J. as will be presently fully explained. Formed upon that end of the swinging frame K, opposite to that at which the'ltraeing-pin u is situated, is a, laterally extending spur, f', which projects into a notclr'or recess, g', formed in the inner end of the portion e of the tool-box I, as shown incre clearly in fig. 1, and also in dotted lines in g. 2, in such manner that, when the said tool-box Iis pushed back or-inward to bring the graving tool in contact with -th'e article to be engraved the 'tracing-pin u will be brought in contact with the pn ttern E.
In using the lathe the watch-case7 piece of plate, er other article to be engraved or ornamented, is secured upon the end of the shaft or mandrel B, as hereinbefore explained, and a rotary motion of the proper speed is given to the said mandrel and also to the disk or pattern yE The sliding frame C is then placed' so as to bring the inner or rearmost end of the block F and pivoted tool-box H at a .suitable distance from the aforesaid article to be engraved, and the adjustable frame D is adjusted laterally in proper position. The tool-box I is then pushed inward by means of its knob or handle d', so that the cutting point of the graving toolJis pressed against the surface of the said article at the same time that the tracing-pin is brought in contact with the pattern E, which being done the screw G is turned, by means of the crank n, in such a manner as toA cause the tracingpin u to follow the various lines of the design or ornamentation formjed or engraved upon the said pattern, which coustitutes, as it rotates, a guide by which the movements of 'the sliding-block F are guided, and, inasmuch as the movements of the point of the graving tool correspond to those ofthe tracing-pin u, it follows that the design engraved or chased upon the watch-case or other article will be indentical with that upon the pattern E which guides or regulates the movements of the graving tool, as just explained.
In engraving a watch-case, or other article having rounded edges, the pivoted block H is turned laterally upon its pivote', so that'the point of the graving tool is moved in the arc oi' a circle, and is thus enabled to act A upon such rounded portions, and chase or engrave the same according to the movement communicated to the graving tool by the pattern E. It' desired, a pattern having a longitudinal or sliding movement maybe substituted in the place of the rotary pattern hereinbefore described, and will serve as a guide for the tracing-pin u, in the same manner as the rotary pattern produces the same result. What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The swinging frame K suspended from the sliding-stock 'r and furnished with the tracing-pin u, in comhination with the pattern E and sliding tool-box I, substantially as hereinset forth for the purpose specified.
2. The sliding frame C, main frame A, and adjustable frame D, combined and arranged in relation with each other and with the tool-box I, swinging frame K, and pattern E, substantially as herein set forth for the purpose specified THOS. LIPPIATT.
