UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. FIELD, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
ENGRAVlNG-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 663,017, dated December 4, 1900.
Application filed March 13, 1899. Serial No. 708 ,9'76. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
, Be it known that I, CHARLES H. FIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at and whose post-office address is No. 113 Point street, Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Engraving-Machines,of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to machines adapted for engraving the backs of Watchcases; and it consists in the improved means for operating the graver-carriage, as hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a top view of the machine for guiding the graver over the protuberant surface of the watch-back. Fig. 2 represents the detail rear view on a diminished scale. Fig. 3 represents a section taken in the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A represents a portion of the bed-frame of the machine, to which the graver-carrying mechanism is secured.
B represents the work shaft or spindle, at the end of which the piece of metal to be engraved or ornamented is secured.
The block C for supporting the graver-carriage is secured to the bed of the machine and provided with the traversing screw D, to
.the outer end of which are secured the handcrank E and the bevel-gear F, the said bevelgear being driven by means of the bevel-pinion F, secured to the shaft G, the opposite end of the said shaft being provided with the spur-gear H, from which operative connection is made with the gear I upon the work-spindle B by means of the stationary intermediate gear J, the movable intermediate gear K, pivoted to the bearing-stud J of the intermediate gear J by means of the bar K, to the outer end of which the gearKis connected by means of the stud K so that upon the rotation of thework spindle B the proper traversing movement Will be imparted to the graver-carriage L by means of the traversing screw D. The screw D passes through the nut D, secured to the traversing block M, which slides upon the supporting-block O. The gravercarriage N is secured to the traversing block M by means of a vertical pivot O at its front end and the dovetailed slide Q, which is fit that said slide may move to and fro in a line at right angles to the axis of the traversing screw. This movement of the slide Q is effected by the movement of the traversing block M, which is due to the revolution of its screw D. Upon the stud m,extendin g upward from the traversing block, is pivoted the lever B, provided at its outer end with the antifriction-roller n and at the inner end engages with the pin 0, extending upward from the slide Q, the said slide being drawn in the outward direction by means of the spiral spring S, attached at one end to the slide and at the other to a bracket 1), secured to the traversing block M, and the action of the spring S will serve to hold the roller n in-close contact with the curved surface q of the stationary cam-plate P, which represents a curve the reverse of that of the surface of the watch-back.
It will be readily seen that the movement to and fro of the traversing block M by means of its traversing screw D will move the antifriction-roller of the lever R along the curved surface g of the stationary cam-plate P, and the engagement of the opposite end of the lever with the pin 0 will cause the movement of the slide Q in or out in a line at right augles to the path of the traversing block M. The graver-carriage N embraces the pivoted bed-piece a, a tool-post b, a slide a, on which the tool-post is mounted, and a hand-lever d, pivoted to the bed-piece a, by means of the overhanging arm e and provided at its inner 'end with the stud r, from which connection is made by a spiral spring f to the slide 0, so that the spring may be controlled for forcing the tool-post forward or so that the slide may be released from the action of the spring when the tool-post is to be withdrawn pending adjustment.
One side of the graver-carriage is provided with the curved arm 70, having at its outer end the antifriction-roller g and the attached chain h, which passes over a pulley i and thence downward through the bed of the machine, the said chain being weighted to effeet the required turning movement of the grave-carriage N upon its pivot O.
In order that the carriage N shall be turned on its pivot only to a degree which shall be in exact proportion to the traversing movement due to the screw D, the stationary camplate P is so set that its curved edge jforms an abutment with which the antifrictionroller 9 engages and along which it cannot be moved by the weight except at a speed corresponding to that at which the carriage is moved toward the cam-plate P by the traversing screw. The cam-plate P is mounted upon a suitable standard which is secured to the bed of the machine.
In carrying out my improvement an integral cam-plate P is preferably employed for imparting both the to-and-fro and the pivotal movement to the grave-carriage so that the cam-surfaces j and q cannot be thrown out of adjustment with each other, and by my improvement the parts which serve to impart the to-and-fro movement to the gravercarriage are of much simpler construction than heretofore and not liable to derangement by wear.
I claim as my invention- In an engraving-machine, the combination traversing block, the lever B. pivoted to the traversing block and engaging at its outer end with the said slide Q, the stationary guidesurfaces q and j, means for holding the outer end of the lever B against the guidesurface q, the screw D for causing the lateral movement of the traversing block and the movement of the outer end of the lever B along the guide-surface q, to impart endwise movement to the slide Q, and the graver-carriage N, pivoted to the slide Q, and provided with the arm is adapted to bear against the guide-surface j, for changing the direction of the axis of the graver-carriage, whereby the operation of the graver-tool will be regulated from guide-surfaces having a fixed relation to each other, so that they may be advantageously formed upon anintegral plate, substantially as described.
