UNITED Srnrns JOHN J. SULLIVAN, OF IPSWICH, MASSACHUSETTS.
SPECIFICATIONVformng part of Letters Patent No. 652,378, dated June 26, 1900. Application filed June 3,1899.| Serial No. 719,186. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, J oHN J. SULLIVAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ipswich, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Sewing Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to that class of button sewing machines adapted to automatically present shank-buttons to the needle, and comprises certain improvements applicable to the machine shown by my Patent No. 596,020, granted December 21,1897. The machine shown by my said patent was provided with a presser-foot constructed to assist the button-feeder, which transfers the buttons from the lower end of the button-chute to the needle; but the present invention provides an attachment to the button-chute itself to assist in guiding the buttons to the needle, this attachment forming practically a continuation or extension of the button-chute. The present invention also relates to a stop on the presser-foot to limit the forward movements of the buttons by the button-feeder, said stop being preferably adjustable, so that its position may be varied as may be required for use with buttons having shanks of different sizes.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a front side View of a portion of a buttonsewing machine equipped with the present improvements. Fig. 2 is a rear side view, and Fig. 3 a front end view, of the same. Fig. t is a side view of the presser-foot, and Fig. 5 a bottoni view of the same.
In the drawings, A denotes the forward end part of the work-supporting arm or "cylinder of the machine and within which the shuttle and feeding mechanisms are arranged, and B denotes the lower portion of the button-chute,having a slot l) to receive the Shanks of the buttons passing down said chute to the needle of the machine. The chute B is provided with a Vsmall bracket b', to which is pivoted by a screw c an arm D, havinga buttonguiding portion d, provided with a buttonshank slot d', registering-0r communicating with or opening into the button-shank slot b of the chute B when the parts are in working position, said slot d' forming practicallya con tinuation of the said slot ZJ. The swinging button-feeder m is constructed and operated essentially the same as is the correspondinglylettered part m of my Patent No. 596,020 and is automatically moved at proper intervals to transfer the buttons one at a time from the button-chiite to sewing position beneath the needle n. v
E is the presser-foot, attached in the usual manner to the presser-bar c, said foot being provided with a stop e', which is preferably adj ustably attached to said foot by a set-screw e2 passing through a slot e3 in the shank of said stop. The stop e is so located that its forward end adjacent to the needle-recess e4 of the presser-foot will serve as an abutment against which the shanks of the buttons will impinge as they are carried to sewing position beneath the needle by the button-feeder m and so that the needle can descend through and outside the eyes of the button-Shanks, and by adjustably attaching the said stop to the presser-foot the position of said stop on said foot may be varied to accommodate buttons of different sizes and having differentsizcd shanks. This button-stop, it will be understood, may be used on the form of presserfoot shown by my said Patent No.v596,020.
The hinged or pivoted button-guide d is preferably loosely connected with the'presserfoot, so as to be raised and lowered with said foot when the work is to be removed from the machine or after it has been placed in sewing position, this connection of said button-guide and foot being effected in the present instance by providing the said guide with a small projection or lug d2, which enters a recess e5 in the side of the presser-foot.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a button-sewing machine, the combination with a button-chute having a buttonshank slot, of a button-feeder to transfer buttons from said chute to the needle, and a button-guiding device movably connected with the lower part of said chute and provided with a button-shank slot or guideway communieating with or opening into the said buttonshank slot of said chute.
2. In a button-sewing machine, the combination with a button-chute having a button- IOO 2' waste shank slot, of a bn tton-feeder to transfer buttons from said chute to the needle, and a pivotally-supported button-guiding device movably connected with the lower part of said chute and provided with a button-shank slot or guideway communicating with or opening into the said button-shank slot of said chute.
3. In a button-sewing machine, the combination with a button-chute having a buttonshank slot, of a button-feeder to transfer buttons from said chute to the needle, apresserfoot, and a button-guiding device pivot-ally, connected to the lower part of said chute and provided with a button-shank slot or guide` way communicating with or opening into the said button=shank slot of said chute, said but= ton-guiding device being loosely connected with said presser=foot so as to be lifted and lowered therewith.
4. In a button-sewing machine, the combination with the button-feeding device thereof., ofv a presser-foot provided with a stop located in the line of movement of the buttonu Shanks and serving as an abutment t-o limit the forward feeding movement of the buttons by their Shanks so as to locate saidshanks `properly relative to the needle.
'5. In a button-sewing machine, the combination with the button-feeding device thereof, of a presser-foot provided with a stop lof cated in the line of movement of the button Shanks and serving as an abutment to limit the forward feeding movement of the buttons by their Shanks so as to locate the Shanks properly relative to the needle, said stop being adjustably attached to said presser-foot so that its position may be varied for dierent-sized button-Shanks.
6. In a button-sewing machine, the combination with the button-feeding device thereof, of a stop located in the path of movement of the button-Shanks and adjacent to the line of movement of the needle and serving as an abutment to limit the forward feeding movement of the buttons by their Shanks so as to locate the Shanks properly relative to the needle.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature i in `the presence of two witnesses.
