(Cl. 112-176) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in blind stitch sewing machines generally, although more particularly to a machine for use in the manufacture of coats as described in my prior Patent 1,905,391 issued April 25, 1933.
Among the several objects of my invention are to provide a sewing machine having a post for supporting the work whereby a plurality of parallel lines of stitches may be readily formed in the layers of materials, the lines beginning at the left side of the material and working over to the right side thereof; to provide such a post machine with suflicient clearance ,under the upper arm of the machine for the work as it is fed rearwardly; to provide a vertically movable post for enabling the operator to insert and remove the work; to
' provide means for normally locking the post against downward movement; to provide manual means for releasing the locking means and for lowering the post without disconnecting or renderl With these and other objects in view which will 0 more fully appear, the nature of the invention will be more clearly understood by following the description, the appended claims, and the several views illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

By reference to the accompanying drawings, will be seen that my invention includes a main frame A which comprises a standard 5 having an arm 6 extending laterally from the upper end thereof and terminating in a forwardly extending upper arm ,'I, and an arm 8 extending laterally from the base. of the' standard and terminating in a forwardly extending base arm '9; the upper arms l, 'I being spaced above and disposed in substantial registration with the baseiarms 8, 9.
Rigidly fixed `to the forward or free end of the upper arm 1, is a presser foot B having a centrally located longitudinal opening or slot I0 formed therein.
Journaled in the upper end of the standard 5 and in the upper arm 6 is a main shaft II. Journaled in the upper arm I and extending-longitudinally thereof is an oscillatory needle shaft I2 having a needle arm I3 fixed to its front end. This shaft I2 is located directly above the opening I0 of the presser foot B, and attached to the needle arm I3 is a curved needle I4 which reciprocates across said opening. The needle shaft I2 is oscillated from the main shaft II by connections which are indicated as a whole by the reference letter X. A looper or spreader I5 cooperates with the needle Il in the usual manner vertically movableftowards and from said foot, is

Carried by the post C and bodily movable up and down therewith are a work clamp E and a 'I'he work clamp E is mounted on theupper end of a vertical post 25 by means of a transverse pivot 25, the'post 25 being movable vertically in a bore 21 formed in the post C, and being nor. mally urged upwardly by a coil spring 25 located in the bore between the lower end thereof and the post. The post 25 is provided with a lower reduced extension which vextends through the coil spring 25 and through an opening in the housingl section I1. and stop nuts 25 are threadably engaged with the lower projecting end there'of for contact with the bottom surface of the post C to thereby limit the upward movement of the work clamp E relative to the post C.
The ridge 4forming element F is formed by a disc which is supported for backward and forward oscillations or reciprocations on. a transverse axis 30 mounted in ears 5|, 3l which project upwardly from the post C, the disc being located;
between the ears and in front of the post 25 of the work clamp E. The axis. I5 of the disc F is located below and in parallelism with the path of movement of thev needle I4, or in other words, at right angles tothe line of feed. '111el disc is positioned in a longitudinal opening 52 in the formed adjacent the radial wall 23 with a trans- Y verse groove forming a resultant feed tooth.
The disc F is oscillated from the main shaft Il in the following mannerz- Journaled in the base arm 5 of the frame and extending longitudinally thereof, is a rock shaft 55 which projects into the standard 5. An eccentric 31 is iixed to the main shaft Il, a rock arm 55 is fixed to the projecting end of the rock shaft 55, and a strap 55 connectsthe eccentric and the rock arm. A ver tically disposed lever 4I is fulcrumed intermediate its ends as at 4| to a lug 42 integral with the rear face of the post C. A rock arm v is nxed to the other end of the rock shaft 35, and a link 44 connects this rock armwith the lower end of' the lever 4l. A horizontal link 45 is pivotally connected at' its rear end to the upper en'dof the/lever 45, and at its frontend to the disc l' at a point below the axis thereof. The support or core 41 is normally locked against vertical movement but is capable of being so moved when the core is moved,land the post C,.the workJr clamp E and the disc F are moved with it. To this end, `a toggle is connectedfto the bottom of the core and to the base arm 9 of the.
main frame, and in the normal or upper position of the core the toggle is spring held in its locked or alined position, and a manual means is provided'for breaking the toggle and lowering the support against the tension of said spring holding means. 'I'he toggle includes a horizontal shaft which extends transve ly of the base l arm 5 and is mounted therein ectly below and in spaced relation to the support or core 41. lA Lreckvarm 5I is fixed to the shaft 55, and the upper end thereof is pivotally connected as 'at 52 to the lower end of a link 53 which is' plvotally connected -as at 54 to the lower portionof the support or core 41. Thus, when the pivots 50, 52 and 54 are in vertical alinement as shown inFigward movement. A heavy coil spring 55 extends longitudinally within the base arm e and has its rear end anchored to a' pin 55 xed to said arm. The forward end of the spring is connected by a link 51 to the rock arm 5|. Astop screw 55 is adjustably mouned in the arm 59 which is integral with and extends rearwardly from the rock arm 5l.y This stop screw 55 limits the rearward pull on the vtoggle by the spring 55 by reason of said screw contacting the base arm e as sho in Figure 4. A forwardly extending lever arm is integral with the rocky arm 5I and forms a resultant `hellcrank lever, vand connected. to the outer end -of this lever arm 50 is the upper end of a chain 5l which is connected at its lower end to a treadiez. Although I have shown a treadle connected to the toggle, it will be rstood that a knee-press orv any other ual means may be substituted if desired.

The rear end of the lever 68 engages over a screw or shoulder 10 fixed to the left side of the post C. A head 1I which is fixed to the outer or forward end of the screw 61 is provided on its upper inclined face with a scale 12. The head is notched on its under face as at 13 for cooperation with a spring pin 14 mounted on the section i1 to yieldably retain lthe screw in an adjusted. position. Thus, by turning the screw in a clockwise direction, the lever 68 will be swung downwardly and thus through the medium of the shoulder screw 10, the post C will be lowered against the ten-r sion of the coil spring 49. Thus by this means the normal or operating position-of the disc F may be readily adjusted to suit fabrics of different weights.
Pivotally mounted on the under face of th presser foot B by pivot screws 16, 16 are levers 11, 11. These levers are disposed on opposite sides of the work clamp E and extend longitudinally thereof. Journaled on the rear end of each lever 11, 11 on a vertical axis 18 is a roller 19 having an inwardly beveled periphery 80. The bevels 80 register with, that is,'parallel, the in clined longitudinal edges 8 I, 8| 4of thework clamp E. The inner ends of the levers 11 are formed with upwardly extending ears 82, 82 which extend through slots 83, 83 formed in the toe or front portion of the presser foot B. Between 'the slots 83, 83 the presser foot is formed with spaced upstanding lugs 84, 84 which extend rearwardly from the front edge of the foot. A transverse horizontal pin 85 is positioned in openings formed in the lugs and the ends of this pin project laterally beyond said lugs toward the slots .83. Coil springs 86, 86 have their inner'ends disposed around the projecting ends of the pin 85 and bear against the lugs 84, the outer ends of said springs bearing against the ears 82 of the levers 11. Thus the springs normally hold the' ears l82 vagainst the outer walls of the slots 83 and thereby yieldably hold the rollers 19 in close proximity to the inclined edges 8| of the work clamp. Thus when fabrics are fed through lthe machine they are fed over the work clamp ent weights are being stitched from time to time, the spring rollers I9 will automatically accom-- morlate themselves to the passing of the fabric and seams.
In the operation of my-machine 'the normal position of the post C is first adjusted by means of the hand screw 61 whereby the normal position of the ridge 4forming disc F will be set for either making blind stitches or through stitches. 'I'he operator then depresses the treadle 62 which -lowers the post C together with the work clamp E and ridge forming element F to the position shown vin Figure 10, and the work is then inserted under the foot B while the post is held in its depressed position. 'The operator then releases the treadle 62 andthe spring 55 returns the post to its normal locked' position. 'I'he material is then fed through the machine in the usual manner, the work clamp 'E being moved downwardly during each feeding movement of the feed dog to thereby reduce the drag of the work between the foot and the clamp. The ridge forming disc F will be oscillated in timed relation to theneedle, and whenever/cross seams are encountered, the' disc will yield sufhciently by reason of the coil spring 49 to permit said seam being fed rearwardly. In coat work it is desirous to obtain the proper roll to the lapel when stitching the canvas to the body fabric, and by means of the spring pressed rollers 19 cooperating with the# inclined edges 8| of the bination with a frame including a standard, a

In a blind stitch sewing machine, the combination with a frame includingv a standard, an upper arm extending laterally from the upper end thereof and terminating in a forwardly extending arm, and a lower arm extending laterally from the lower end of the standard andterminating in a forwardly extending arm, said upper and lower arms being disposed one above the other; of a presser foot fixed to the free end of the upper arm; a main shaft journaled in the standard; a stitch` forming mechanism including a horizontally reciprocatory needle vmounted on the free end of the upper arm above the foot and having driving connections with the main shaft; a post mounted on the free end of the base arm for limited vertical movements; a spring for yieldably retaining the post against downward movement; manually operable means for adjusting the normal height of the post; saidy 1 means comprising a shoulder on the post, a lever pivoted on the lower frame arm and overlying the shoulder, and a hand screw mounted on the lower frame arm above the lever and engaging the latter; a vertically yieldable work clamp mounted on the post for cooperation with the foot; a movable ridge forming element mounted on the post and projecting upwardly through the work clamp for intermittently projecting a ridge of material upwardly through the foot into needle penetrating position; driving connections between the ridge forming element and the main shaft, said connections extending along the lower arm and into the standard; and means actuated by the main shaft for interzriittently feeding the material past the needle.
12. In a blind stitch sewing machine, the combination with a frame including a standard, a base arm extending horizontally therefrom, and
an upper varm extending horizontally from .the
cooperation with the stationary foot; a movable ridge forming element mounted on the post and projecting upwardly through the work clamp for intermittently projecting a ridge of material upwardly through the foot into needle-penetrating position and having driving connections with the main shaft; means actuated by the main shaft for intermittently feeding the material past the needle; means including a spring for normally holding said post against depression; and man- -ual means for depressing said post against said spring means. y
13. In a blind stitch sewing machine, the combination with a frame including a standard, a base arm extending horizontally therefrom, and
an upper arm extending horizontally from the Astandard and disposed above and in spacecl'sparallel relation tothe base arm; of a presser foot xed to the free end of said upper arm; a main shaft journaled in the standard; a stitch forming mechanism includinga horizontally reciprocatory ly projecting a ridge of material upwardly through the'foot into needle-penetrating position and having drivingconnectlons with the main shaft; means actuated by the main shaft for intermittently feeding the material past the needle; releasable means for locking the post against depression, and manual means for releasing said `locking means and for depressing said post.
14. In a blind stitch sewing machine, the combination with a.v frame including a standard, a base arm`extending horizontally therefrom, and
v anv upper arm extending horizontally from the standard and disposed aboveand in spaced parallel relation to the base'arm; of a presser foot fixed to the free -end of said upper arm; a main shaft journaled in the standard; a stitch forming mechanism including a horizontally reciprocatory needle mounted on the free end of the upper arm above the presser foot and havingl driving connections with the main shaft; a depressible post mounted on the free end of the lower arm directly under the foot; a vertically yieldable work clamp mounted on the post for cooperation with the stationary foot; a movable `ridge form-7 ing element mounted on the post and projecting upwardly through the work clamp for intermittently projecting a ridge of material upwardly through the foot into needle-penetrating position and `having driving connections with the main shaft; means actuated by the main shaft for intermittently feeding the material past the needle; releasable means forf locking the post against depression comprising a toggle connection between the post and the lower arm and a springconnecting the toggle and the lower arm for nrmalLv retaining the toggle in locked position, and manual means connected to the toggle for breaking the latter and depressing the post against the tension of the spring,

In a sewing machine, the combination with a frame including a standard, an upper arm extending laterally from the upper end thereof, and a lower arm extending laterally from the lower -end of the standard; of a stitch forming mechanism mounted on the free end of the upper arm, a depressible work-supporting post mounted "on the free end of the lower arm directly below said stitch forming mechanism, means including a spring for normally holding said post against depression, and manual means for depressing said post against the tension of said spring means.
20. In a sewing machine, the combination with a frame including a standard, an upper arm extending laterally from the upper end thereof,
and a lower arm extending laterally from the lower end of the standard; of a stitch forming mechanism mounted on the free end of the upper arm, a depressible work-supporting post mounted on the free end of the lower arm directly below said stitch forming mechanism, releasa-bl-e means for locking the post against depression, and manual means for releasing said'locking means and for depressing said post.
21. In a sewing machine, the combination'with I a frame including a standard, an upper arm extending laterally from the upper end thereof, 'and a lower arm extending laterally from the lower end of the standard; of a stitch forming mecha- I Y nism mounted on the `free end of the upper arm,
a depressible work-supporting post mounted on the free end ofthe lower arm directly below said stitch forming mechanism, releasable means for locking theV post against depression comprising a toggle connection between the post and the lower arm and a spring connecting the toggle and the lower arm for normally retaining the toggle in locked position, and manual means connected to the toggle for breaking the latter and de-` pressing the post against the .tension of the spring.

In a .sew-ing machine, the combination with a frame including a standard, an upper arm extending laterally from the upper end thereof, and a lower arm extending laterally from the lower end of the standard; of a stitch forming mechanism mounted on ,the free end of the upper arm, a depressible work-supporting post mounted on the free end of the lower arm directly below said stitch forming mechanism, releasable means for locking the post against depression comprising a toggle connection between the post and the lower arm and a spring connecting the toggle and the lower arm for normally'retaining the toggle in locked position, stop means between the toggle and the lower arm for limiting the locking movement of the toggle under the inuence ofthe spring, and manual means connected to the toggle for breaking the latter and depressing the post against' the tension of the spring.
23. In a sewing machine, the combination with a frame including a standard, an upper arm ex- -tending laterally from the upper end thereof, and
alower arm extending laterally from Ithe lower end of the standard; of a stitch forming mechanism mounted on the freer end of the upper arm, a depressible work-supporting post mounted on the free end of the lower arm directly below said stitch forming mechanism. releasable means forvv locking the post against depression comprisingV A a toggle connection between the post and the lower arm and a spring connectingthe toggle and the lower arm for normally retaining the toggle in locked position, an adjustable stop screw carried by the toggle for cooperation with the Y nism mounted on the free end of the Iupper arm, Aa depressible workfsupporting post mounted on the free end of the lower arm directlybelow said stitch forming mechanism, releasable means for locking the post against depression comprising a toggle connection between the post and the lower arm and a spring connectingthe toggle and the lower arm for normally retaining the toggle in locked position, said toggle including a bell crank lever fulcrumed on the lower arm 'below the post and a-link connecting the vertical arm of the bell crank lever with the post, said spring connecting the toggle and the lower arm, and
manual means connected to the horizontal arm of the hell crank lever for breaking the toggle and depressing the post against the tension of y the spring.

In a sewing machine, the combination with a frame including a standard, an upperarmextending laterally from the upper end thereof, and a lower arm-extending laterally from the lower end voi.' the standard; of a stitch forming mechanism mounted on the free end of the upper arm, a depressible work-supporting post mounted on the free end of the lowerarm directly below said stitch vforming mechanism, releasable means for locking `the post against depression comprising a toggle connection between the post and the lower arm and aspring connecting the toggle and the loyer arm fornormally retaining the toggle in locked position, said toggle including a bell crank lever fulcrumed on the lower arm below the posi'lv and a link connecting the vertical arm of the bell crank lever with the post, said spring connecting the toggle and the lower arm, stop means between the arm for limiting the locking movement of the toggle under the influence of the spring, and manual means connected to the horizontal arm of the bell crank lever for breaking the toggle and depressing the post against the tension of the spring. f

said Vclamp having downwardly inclined side.- edges, a ridge forming element for projecting a ridge of material upwardly through the presser foot opening into yneedle penetrating position, a pair of pressure elements mounted on the foot on opposite sides of the work clamp and having inclined faces for cooperation with the inclined side edges of said clamp, and spring means urging the elements towards the clamp.

In a blind stitch sewing machine, the com bination with a stationarypresser foot having an opening therein, of a. stitch forming mechanism located above theroot and including a horizont/a1- ly reciprocatory needle movable across lthe presser foot opening, clamp located below and cooperatingewith the foot, said clamp having downwardly inclined side edges, aridge forming element for projecting a ridge of material upwardly through the presser foot opening into needle penetrating position, a pair oi pressure elementsmoun-ted on the foot on opposite sides of the work clamp and havingv inclined faces for cooperation with the inclined side edges 'of said clamp, spring means urging theelements towards the clamp, and means for limiting the movements of the elements towards the clamp.

In a blind stitch sewingmachine, the combination with `a stationary presser' foot having an opening therein, oi a stitch forming mechanism located above the foot and including a horizontally reciprotory needle `movable across the presser foot opening,v a vertically yieldable work clamp .located below and `cooperating with the foot, said clamp having downwardly inclined side edges, a ridge forming element for projecting a ridge of material upwardly throughthe presser foot opening into needle penetrating position, a pair of pressure rollers located below the foot on opposite sides oi the work clamp, said rollers having downwardly and inwardly inclined peripheries for cooperation with the inclined side edges of the clamp, means for supporting the'rollers;

In a blind stitch sewing machine, the combination with a stationary press`er foot having an opening therein, ofga stitch forming mechanism located above the foot and including a horizontally 4rec1procatory needle movable across' the presser foot opening, a vertically yieldable ,work` clamp located below and cooperating with the foot, saidclamp having downwardly inclined side edges, a. ridge forming element for projecting a 'ridge of material upwardly through the presser foot opening into needle penetrating position, a pair of pressure rollers located below the foot on opposite sides of the work clamp, 'said rollers having downwardly and inwardly inclined peripheries for cooperation with the inclined sideedges of the clamp, a pair of levers extending longitudinally of the foot on opposite sides of the work clamp and'being' fulcrumed intermediate their ends on said foot, said rollers being journaled on the innerends of said levers, and spring means interposed betweemthe foot and the outer ends of the levers for urging the rollers toward the l work.clamp.
