TO ALI WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that I, S. E. CHUBBUCK, ot'VItoxbury, in the county 'of No1-folle. and State of Massachusetts,
` have invented a new and improved' Means for Cutting Sheet Lead duringr the process of rollingy the saine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enablel others skilled in the art to make and use the suine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forining part of this specification. l
Sheet lead is at present manufactured by rolling heavy lead plates into sheets of the required thickness, heavy-pressure rollers being employed for that purpose, arranged with a long bed pro-vided with friction-rollers, to admit of the lead being readily passed back and forth between the rollers. These plates, as they are rolled, of .course greatly increase in length, and long before they are red uced or drawn out to the properor desired thickness become unwieldy and dillicult to manage, and are necessarily cut transversely into two parts', and each part 4rolled or inilled separately.
My invention relates to a new and improved means for cutting the sheet lead transversely during the rolling or milling process, whereby said work in ay be done with the greatest facility. In the accompanying sheet of drawings* Figure 1 is'a vertical section of my invention, taken in the line a; a', tig.- 3.,
Figure 2, a vertice-l scctionof the saine, taken in the line g/ y, iig. l.
Similar lettcrsof reference indicate like parts. v
A represents a bed of any suitable or desired length, `having'frictionrollers` t inserted in it to admit ot" the lead being readily passed back and forth between pressure-rollers, in order that it may be rolled or drawn out to the proper degree of thinness. .lhese parts are of usual construction, and .therefore do not' require a minute description.` B represents a vertical tube, which is at the lower part of a bracket,A C, the upper end of the latter being provided with cross-heads Z1 l), which are l'itted in guides D D, placed transversely over and a suitable distance above the bed A. A ruck, E, is secured to or cast with the bracket C, said rack being parallel with the guides D D, and having a pinion, F, gearing into it, the shaft Gr of' said pinion having itsy bearings c on the guides-D D. The tube B, bracket C, and rack E are ot' metal, and may all be east in -one piece, and Within the tube B there is .placed loosely a rod or arbor, Gr, in the lower pnrt of which a circular rotary cutter, H, is fitted. In the tube B, above the rod or arbor G, there is placed a spiral spring, I, the lower end of which bears on the top G, and the upper end .is attached to or bears against a disk, d, underneath e. screw, J, which passes through the upper end of tube B. The spring Iis compressed, and consequently made to act or bear upon G with a greater or less degree of pressure, by turning or adjusting the screw J, the downward movement of the rod or arbo-r G being regulatedby a screw, K, which passes laterally through thetube B into a. slot, e, in the side of G', as shown clearly in tig. 1. The cutter H works over .a bar, L, placed transverselyin the bed A, and this bar may have a metal strip,f, inserted in it longitudinally. The cutter isnot allowed to bear upon this metal strip, the screw K admitting of the cutter just/touching it so that the edge of H will not be blunted or deprived of keenness.
rlhe operation will be very readily understood. When the sheet of lead requires to be cut transversely, the CutterV II is moved back and forth over it by operating a crank, M, at one end of the shaft G, the spring I forcing tho cutter through the sheet lead. When the cutter is not required for use, itis moved to one side of the bed A.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isn
l. The arbor G, provided with the rotary'cutter II, and adjusted in the hollow shank B of the arms O, by means of the spring I and set-screws .I K, substantially as described for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the above I claim the transverse racks E, guides D D, in which the cross-heads b slide, pinion F, and transverse bar Ii, substantially as described for the purpose specified.
S. E. OHUBBUCK.
