UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
- JOSIAH S. ALBRIGH'I, OF VAN WERT, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES E. LAWI-IEAD, OF SAME PLACE.
PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 651,688, dated June 12, 1900.
Application filed March 24, 1900. Serial No. 10,049. (No model.)
T0 ctZZ whom it may concern).-
Be it known that I, JOSIAH S. ALBRIGHT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Van Wert, in the county of Van Wert and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
One object of this invention is to provide an improved pump by which the water is lifted and discharged from the spout through the medium of an auxiliary air-pump which is connected to the main pump-cylind er, the said air-pump lifting the water into the main pump-cylinder upon the upstroke of the piston and discharging the water'upon the downstroke of said piston.
A further object of the invention is toprovide a peculiar construction of pump-valves by means of which the water is permitted to leak past the valves when the latter are at rest, so that the water will readily drain from the body of the pump and prevent freezing.
With the above objects in view the invention consists in the peculiar construction and combination of parts comprising the pump, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanyin g drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which like letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pump constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig.2 is a vertical sectional view through the pump. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of one of the pump-valves.
Referring to said drawings,A designates the main pump-cylinder, which is provided at its ends with flanges a a, to which are bolted a top plate B and the flanged upper end a of the well-pipe C. At one side of the cylinder A is formed an outlet pipe or elbow D, the
upper end of which is provided with a flange d, to which is bolted a cylinder or valve casing E, and to the upper end of this cylinder or valve casing is bolted the discharge-pipe or pump-stock F, terminating in a spout G. In the lower ends of the cylinders A and E are located ball-valves H and 1, respectively, the movement of said balls off their seats being limited by means of webs 8, formed inthe to a bracket M, projecting therefrom.
cylinders, said webs also directing the balls onto their seats and insuring the passage of the water around said balls. The seats of the ball-valves are of peculiar construction for the purposes of the invention, and as they are similar a description of one will apply to both. Said improved valve-seat is made up of a bent plate K, the upper member 7t being narrower than the lower member 7a and lies normally above the same to permit water to pass around said upper member and through the opening in the lower member for the purpose hereinafter explained. The member 7; of the seat is also adapted to close down upon the lower member to form a tight valve dur- -ing the operation of pumping, and though both members are provided with central openings for the passage of the water when the ball is off its seat the said ball is adapted to fit into the opening of the upper member. The said valve-seats are held in place as shown in the accompanying drawings.
L designates the air-pump, which is located in the rear of the pump-stock F and is bolted The cylinder of the air-pump is connected to the upper end of the main pump-cylinder A by a vertical pipe N, which is a comparativelysmall pipe, and working in the cylinder of the air-pump is a piston 0, connected by a rod P to a lever or pump-handle R, the latter being pivoted at its inner end to earst of a twopart collar T, bolted on the pump-stock. The inner end of the lever or handle is bifurcated to embrace the pump-stock and bring the pivot-point in front of said pump-stock, so that the desired movement can be imparted to the piston of the air-pump without requiring an excessive movement of the operating end of said lever or handle.
In the operation of the pump the upstroke of the piston of the air-pump draws the water into the main cylinder A, past the ball valve H, and upon the downstroke of said piston the valve H closes and the water is forced past the valve I and into the dischargepipe, it being understood that the valve I closes upon the upstroke of the piston to prevent back pressure in the discharge-pipe. It will also be noted that during the operation of the pump the pressure upon the ball-valves ,ter is being lifted.
"quickly closes the member 7c of the valveseat upon the" member 70', and thereby prevents any leakage around the valves. When the pump is at rest, however, the members 7c of the val ve-seats,, being relieved of pres- .sure, will rise slightly and permit the water to leak through the valves, and thereby drain the body of the pump. Thisis particularly desirable in winter, as it will drain all the amined or repaired in case it should get out of order. The particular construction and arrangement of the valves also insures their perfect operation while the pump is in use,
forming tightvalves, while'they also provide for ,draining the dump when it is at rest,
Havingthus described my invention,"what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isr i 1. In a pump, thecombination, of the cylinders A and E connected to each other and to the well-pipe and discharge-pipe, respec-j mally separated, said parts havingo penings 2; Aball-valve for a pump, comprising, in
combination with the ball, a plate bent upon itself to present two parts normally separated and provided with openings, the ball being adapted to close one, of the openings, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a pump, the combination, of'the cylinders A and E connected to each other and to the .well-pipe and discharge-pipe, respectively, ball-valves located in the bottom of saidcylinders and closing downward, and valve-seats for the balls comprising abent plate" presenting two parts normally separated; together with an air-pump supported adjoining the pump-stock, a collar attached to the pump-stock and having ears-located on the opposite side of said pump-stock from the air-pump, and a pump-handle having a bifurcated lever pivoted to the aforesaid ears, the pump-handle being connected to the piston-rod of the air-pump, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSIAH s; ALBRIG'HT.
