Description

UNITED STATES 'CLAYTON H.
PATENT OFFICE.
STROUD, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM O. DUTTLINGER, OF SAME PLACE.
NUT-LOCK.
SPECIFIGATIQN forming part of Letters Patent N o. 651,677', dated June 12, 1900.
Application iiled July 22,1899.
T0 @ZZ whom, t nec/,y concern/.-
Be it known that I, CLAYTON H. STROUD, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a front eleva tion of my lock, the locking device being shown out of engagement with the nut-in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the invention, the lock being shown as effected. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views showing a modiiied form of washer. Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 2, the locking device being shown as just engaging the nut.
This invention is designed to provide a nntlock of improved character; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and point- .ed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates a bolt, and B its nut, both of which are of the usual form.
C designates the washer, which in Figs. 1 and 2 is shown as consisting of a flat plate of metal formed with an extension at one edge, which is rolled or bent upon itself to form a forwardly-offset tubular eye or barrel c.
. D designates a locking device, which consists of a piece of metal, such as a short piece of heavy wire, bent to form two portions at substantially right angles to each other. One of said arms is of double form, the wire being bent or doubled upon itself, as shown, forming snbstantiallyparallel arms (Z d. The arm d passes loosely through the eye or barrel c, while the arm d lies between said barrel and the adjacent face of the nut, against which it bears to form a secure lock. The
other arm of the locking device, which extends directly downward from the eye or barrel and which is spaced from the adjacent Serial No. 724,862. (No model.)
. side of the nut, serves as a handle by means 5o of which the arm d' may be turned down into engagement with the nut or up out of such engagement, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. l, to release the lock. In turning the arm d into locking engagement it is colnpressed somewhat, thereby giving it a secure frictionalor spring bearing against the nut.
In Figs. 3 and 4 I have shown a modification wherein the washer is made of double form.
Fig. 5 shows the initial form of the blank wherein the two similar plate portions H are connected by a narrower portion 7i. These plate portions are bent over upon each other, and the connectingportion h is bent to form a tubular eye or barrel similar tothe eye or barrel ein the form first described. The locking device is the same as that above described, except that I have shown the bearing-face of its arm d filed o to give a square 7ol surface. This may also be done in the forni first described or it may not be used in either form. The double form of the washer gives it a certain amount of elasticity or spring action when the nut is screwed home against the parallel plate portions.
` The above-described devices provide a very simple and secure lock, which may be conveniently applied to ordinary bolts and nuts wherever it is desirable to secure the nut.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l.A The herein-described nut-lock, comprising a washer having an eye or barrel, and a locking device, having an arm pivoted in said barrel, bent reversely at one end and extended substantially parallel with said barrel into engagement with the adjacent side of the nut and terminating at about the farther ex- 9o tremity of said side, and at its opposite end portion extended directly downward past the termination of said locking-arm to form a handle spaced from the adjacent side of the nut, substantially as specified.
2. In a nut-lock, the combination with the washer formed with an eye or barrel, of the locking device having an arm pivoted in said eye or barrel and bent reversely into spring ingan arm in direct spring engagement with Y engagement with the adjacent side of the Va, side of the nut, substantially as specified. xo nut, andthe second arm or handle extending 1n testimony whereof I affix my signature directly downward from said barrel, substanin presence o f two witnesses.
5 tially as specified. A v Y' v- CLAYTON H. STROUD.
8.` In a, nut-lock, the combination with a Witnesses:
washer having an eye or barrel, of a locking W. C. DUTTLINGER, device pivoted insaid eye orbarrel, and hav- JOHN GASSER.
