Description
HUBERT BURGESS, OF SAN y FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
Letters .Patent No. 65,165, dated lag/ 28, 1867.
PENCIL-SHARPENER.
IO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONOERN:
Be it known thatl I', HUBERT BURGESS, of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented a new and improved Pencil-Sharpener; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference beingI had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of` this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing a device by which slate and lead pencils, also crayons, may bc sharpened in the most perfect and expeditious manner. It consists more particularly in constructing a smell case in which is fitted a small tray, in which is secured a smallfile upon which the pencil is sharpened after the wood has been cut away.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. I
Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved pencil-Sharpener,
Figure 2 is at side elevation of the same.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional elevation of iig. 2.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
A represents a box or case made of sheet metal, and B a. tray, which may be made of' the same material, und to fit closely in the case or box A. In this tray B is secured a flat file, C, by soldering or otherwise, upon which the pencil is applied forthe purpose of being sharpened. At the front side and ends of this file C is a. space for the purpose of receiving the dust as it is iled from the pencil. This tray B is made to slide out and in the case or box A, and when closed makes a neat and compact little device.
This invention is designed for public schools, and by which a. child can sharpen its pencil in the nentest and mostperfect manner, by simply laying the pencil on the file and letting it rest upon the side of the tray, which -serves as a guide; then by moving it-alternately back and forth a neat flat point is mede. The tray containing the file may bc held in the hand or allowed to rest on the desk or table, in the latter case, being much firmer, the file cuts better, and a point is made more quickly. The space around the le is made to contain the' dust, rendering the process of sharpening exceedingly simple, expeditions, and perfectly clean. In crayon drawing the constant use of the knife in cutting the points, and the difiiculty of the operation, having to cut from the point downward, renders it not only tedious, but filthy in consequence of the dust. The use of my'inve'ntion entirely obviates the difficulty, rendering it easy, and accomplishing the object without soiling the fingers.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The case or box A, tray B, and ile C, for sharpening pencils, substantially as shown and described.
