To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. FILLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lansdowne, Delaware county, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Surgical Instruments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,'forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to surgical instruments having a pair of relatively-movable blades each terminating in an operating-handle, with a hinge between them whereby such operative movements may be effected; and my improvement therein has for its objects, first, to so constructthe blade and handle that a drainage-passage is formed leading directly and uninterruptedly from the usual spoonlike body of the blade to the extreme end of the operating-handle, as respects each movable member of .the device, and also to so construct the blade and handle at their point of junction with each other as to impart unusual strength to the instrument at said point, so as thereby to minimize the liability of displacement of' the blades relatively to each other, an exceedingly-i m portant desideratum in surgical devices of this character, and my means for accomplishing these ends is simple, effective, and economical in construction.
To these ends my invention consists of'the construction hereinafter described,and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a plan View of my improved device; Fig. 2, a side elevation; Fig. 3, a rear end view; Fig. 4', a section on line so or of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5, a planview of a similar device to that shown in Fig. 1, differing only in the location of the hinge at the junction of the blade and handles instead of at the extremity of the latter.
The blade of the device is indicated at A and is usually spoon-shaped. The operatinghandle is indicated at B, which is formed with a gutter by rounding or bending up the sides, as indicated at b. At the junction of the blade and handle it will be observed that a twist (as at c) is given to the metal forming blade portion.

Such a device having all these features may by constructing it as I have described be readily struck up from flat sheet metal by the successive action on the blank of suitable dies adapted to produce the two effects or results mentioned. The parts are pivotally united by a'hinge m. An adjusting-screw n is sometimes added.
For some purposes a surgical instrument of this general character has its members hinged at or near the junction of blade and handle, as at min Fig. 5, while for other purposes surgeons prefer the hinge to be .placed at the extremity of the operating-handle, as
at m in Fig. 1; but either location may be employed in my device, as shown by the drawings.
' The advantages of my invention are obvione to those skilled in either the manufacture or the use of such devices. The instrument has increased strength at the point where strength and rigidity are most needed, it is simple in construction, and hence has decided utility by way of decreased cost of manufacture, it tends to maintain with great certainty the proper relative positions of the blades, whereby they will properly register with each other, and it provides a gutter or channel for discharges, whereby the instrument may be used with greater cleanliness than usual.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In'surgicalinstruments,the combination of a pair of relatively-movable blades each terminating in an operating-handle, with a hinge between them whereby such movements may be effected, the blades being formed with a spoon-like concavity and said handles being formed with a concavity beginning at itsjunction with the blade and extending and leading directly to the extreme end of the handle; substantially as described.
2.
