SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 651,379, dated June 12, 1900.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, SnRnNo E. NORTON, a citizen of the United States,residing in Evanston, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Match-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in pocket match-boxes. l

The object of my invention is to provide a simple, convenient, neat, efficient, and cheap construction of sheet-metal match-box without soldering or riveting together of parts, so that the body of the box may be made out of metal sheets which are enameled, japanned, or otherwise decorated while in the flat and inwliich the parts of the box may all be put together without marring or injuring the decoration and so that the boxes may be rapcombinations of parts and devices herein' shown and described,-and specied in the claims.

In said drawings, A represents the sheetmetal body of the box, the same being formed out of a flat sheet-metal blank by folding the same into the desired shape in cross-section and forming the abutting oppositely-turned hooks or curved flanges d a on its meeting Fig. 6 'is an enedges at the back a of the body.. The body A is also provided at its two flat sides n.2 a2, near the loweror bottom end of the body, with two beads or corrugations CL3 a4, forming a groove a5 between them, the upper bead Vor corrugation a4 being preferably larger than y the lower one a3.

B is a folded socket-strip having hooks or flanges b b turned on its side edges to form a socket which telescopes over the corresponding hooks or flanges a a, turned on the meeting edges of the body A, and which thus serves to firmly unite or seam together without rivets or solder the two meeting edges of the body. The hooks or flanges b on one side of the socket-strip do not extend along the full length of the socket-strip, as the same is pro-- vided with similarly but oppositely turned hooks or ilanges b for a portion of its length to form a socket to receive and hold iirmlyin place the spring O, by which the hinged cover D of the box is thrown open. The socketstrip B is further provided at its upper end with an integral tongue, which is rolled or folded into an eye b2 for the hinge-pin of the cover. The cover D, which is made' from a single sheet-metal blank, has a flange or rim d at its sides, back, and front and an inclined integral kicker or tongue d, which is engaged by the upper end of the kick-spring O to cause the hinged cover to be thrown open by said spring. The cover D is also provided at its back with integral eyes d2 d2, one on each side of the kicker df, to receive the hinge pin or pivot d3, by which the cover is hinged 'to the socket-strip and thusy to the box-body.

The body A is provided with an external bead or corrugations n.6 at its sides near its upper end to form shoulders for the rim cr flange d of the cover D to shut or abut against when the cover is closed. At the upper or 'cover end of the body its two sides a2 c2 extend above or beyond its back a and the upper or eye end of the socket-strip B, so that after the cover is hinged y.to the socket-strip pin from slipping out. The front corners a8 of the box sides are Aclipped off or inclined, and the back corners a are preferably also inclined, but not sufficient to prevent the projecting ends a7 of the box sides a2 a2 to slightly overlap the ends of the hinge-pin d3.

F is the bottom of the box, which, like the cover D, is stamped up out of a single sheetnietal blank. It has an integral rim or flange f, furnished with a slightly-inturned upper edgef to enter and fit in the groove a5 in the body A, and it is further provided with a marginal groove or channel f2 to receive the extreme lower end or edge a of the box-body and slightly wedgeor incline it outward when the body is pushed forcibly into the bottom. The inclined or wedge-acting marginal groove or channel f2 in the bottom F is formed by curving the bottom upward, thus giving the bottom a wide external channel f3 on its outside, which is furnished with transverse corrugalions fA1 to produce a rough or matchstriking surface in this wide channel of the bottom. The eye or rolled tongue h2 is preferably first formed on the socket-strip B, so that the edge folds h may overlap the end D4 of the hinge-pivot cye, and thus strengthen said eye.

To firmly secure the bottom F to the body A, it is s imply necessary to insert the latter within the former and forcibly push or telescope them together, when the bead or shoulder a will further curve or turn the extreme inturned edge f' into the groove a5 ou the body, and the inclined or Wedging marginal channel fzin the bottom will force or curve the extreme lower end of the body into said marginal channel, thus securely locking the two parts together without solder or rivets.

To seam or imite together the Yneeting edges of the body, the socket-strip B is simply telescoped over the hooks or fianges a a on the body, after which the interlocked heads or flanges on the socket-strip and body may be slightly bumped or pressed toget-her to more rigidly and closely unite or lock together these parts. Before the socket-strip Bis applied to the body the cover D should be hinged to the socket-strip, or otherwise the projecting ends a7 of the box sides a2 would interfere with the easy insertion of the hingepin cl3, and for convenience of bumping or pressing the interlocked hooks or fianges of the body and socket-strip together I ordinarily apply the bottom F to the body after, and not before, the socket-strip is applied. The kick-spring C, which is made slightly tapering, is fixed in place by simply firmly crowding it into its socket in the socket-strip.

As my match-box consists of but six separate pieces, inclusive of the hinge-pin, and as each and all the parts are of simple form and capable of being rapidly and cheaply made, and as all the parts may be easily and quickly assembled and secured together Without any soldering or riveting, it Will be understood that my box may not only be manufactured and furnished at small cost, but also readily made of enameled or decorated sheet metal without danger of marring or injuring the decorated surface.

I claiml. A sheet-metal match-box without solder or rivets, comprising in combination a body having hooks or curved flanges on its meeting edges, a socket-strip having hooks or fianges embracing the hooks or fian ges on the meeting edges of the body, and provided with hooks or fianges on its opposite face to form a socket to receive and hold the spring, and provided with an eye at its upper end to rcceive the hinge-pivot of the cover, a spring fitting in said socket of the socket-strip, a cover having an integral kicker 0r tongue t0 engage the spring and eyes for the hinge-pin, and a bottom provided with a rim or flange having an inturned upper edge and an inclinedfor wedging marginal-groove to engage the extreme lower edge ofthe end ofthe body, said body having a shoulder and a groove to engage the upper edge of the bottom flange or rim, substantially as specified.

2. ln a sheet-metal match-box, the combination with the body having hooks or flanges on its meeting edges at its back, of a socketstrip embracing said hooks or flanges on the body and provided with a socket to receive the spring, substantially as specified.

a spring, and an integral projection on the cover engaging the spring, substantially as specified.

5. The combination with a sheet-metal body A, having hooks or fianges a a at its back meeting edges, a spring and a socket-strip having hooks or flanges h embracing said hooks or flanges on the back of the body and provided with a socket to receive said spring, substantially as specified.

6. The combination with a sheet-metal body A, having hooks or flanges a a at its back meeting edges, and a socket-strip having hooks or flanges h embracing said hooks or fianges on the back of the body, said socketstrip having a hinge-pivot eye at its upper end, substantially as specified.

7. The combination Withthe body, of a metal strip secured at the back of the body and provided with a coiled eye at its upper end to receive the hinge-pivot of the cover, and a one-piece sheet-metal cover D having integral fiange Z provided at its back with IOO IIO

8. The combination with the body, of a metal strip secured at the back of the body and provided with a coiled eye at its upper end to receive the hinge-pivot of the cover, and a one-piece sheet-metal cover D having integral ilange CZ provided with an integral tongue d at its back and a cover hinged to said strip, the sides of said body extending above the hinge of the cover and overlapping the ends of the hinge-pin to keep it in place, substantially as specified.

9. The combination with body A having beads or shoulders a3 a4 and groove co5 between them, of a bottom F having iiange or rim f and inclined or wedging marginal channel f2 locking the bottom and body together, substantially as specified.

12. The combination with body A having flanges a a, of socket-strip having flanges b b and b b and eye b2, spring C, and cover D having rim d, kicker-tongue d and eyes d2 d2, substantially as specilied.

l. The combination with body A having anges at a, of socket-strip having flanges b b and b b and eye b2, spring C, and cover D having rim CZ, kicker-tongue d and eyes d2 d2 and bottom F secured to said body by interlocking grooves and flanges, substantially as specified.
