UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN L. WARING, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
AUXILIARY FIRE APPLIANCE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 650,921, dated June 5, 1900. Application filed $ eptem'ber 13, 1 99. serial no. 730,349; (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. VVARING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auxiliary Fire Appliances; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whicli it appertai-ns to make and use the same.
The invention relates to improvements in auxiliary fire-extinguishing appliances; and the object of the invention is to provide an appliance located at convenient public points, preferably near a fire-alarm signal-box, and adapted to contain accessible portable fireextinguishers, which in incipient fires may be used in an emergency to extinguish the flames before the arrival of the fire-engines.
To this end the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved auxiliary fire-extinguishin g apparatus; Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section.
In the drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
A denotes a post or other support to which the casing-cover 1 is permanently fixed'by the screw-bolts 2 2, and 3 denotes the casing proper, which has a sliding engagement with the cover.
4 4 denote hooks fixed in the cover to en gage the eyes 5 5, formed on the caps 6 6 of the depending tubes 7 7, which contain a suit able chemical for extinguishing a fire.
8 denotes a guide-bracket fixed on the cover 1 to receive the sliding bolt 9, which also passes through the guide-bracket 10, fixed on the casing 3, and its lower end terminates in a recess 12 to receive the keeper 13, pivoted on the casing to support the latter in placewhen the keeper is engaged with the bolt. An orifice 14 is formed in the bolt 9 immediately below the bracket 10 to receive the hasp,
of a padlock or any other suitable lock tosecure the bolt in place in such instances as.
where the keeper 13 is not employed.
15 denotes abox or hood which encompasses the lower end of the bolt and lock or keeper,
and it is provided with a hinged door con taining a pane of glass which may be broken to release the bolt and gain access to the fire-' extinguishers.
In the practical application of the appliance the device, as hereinbefore stated, isprefer ably fixed to the same support with the fire alarm-telegraph signal-box, and'when a citizen or policeman discovers a fire he first turns in the alarm and immediately removes one or more of the extinguishers from the appliance and repairs to the scene of the fire, and, if it be an incipient one, is enabled to extinguish it before the arrivalof the firemen.
It will of course be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this in vention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. An auxiliary fire-extinguishing appliance comprising a fixed casing-cover, a casing removably secured to said casing-cover and adapted to contain portable or hand fireextinguishers, and means for locking said casing to said cover, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. An auxiliary fire-extinguishing appliance comprising a fixed casing-cover, means for suspending a series of hand fire-extinguishers to said cover and a casing removably secured to said cover and adapted to encompass said extinguishers, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. An auxiliary fire-extinguishing ance comprising acasing-cover secured to a fixed support, means for removablysecuring In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
