TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, E. HUNTER, M. D*.,-of Cleveland, in the county oi Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Compound for Silver-Plating, Cleaning Silver, and Platedare, 86G. and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description. of the same, and the mode of using it..
In forming this compound, I take, of pure silver, Your ounces; cyanide of potassium, three ounces; oil of sassafras or its equivalent, half a draehm; Paris White or its equivalent, ten pounds; ammonia, four ounces; benzine or other hydrocarbon, two ounces; water sufficient to hold the silver in solution. First, dissolve the silver in the cyanide of potassium, then add water suilicicnt to give it a proper consistency and hold the silver in solution next, I mix the Paris White with water to the consistency of common cream, and it may be thicker or thinner, as thought best, without changing the nature of the iHVGUtlOlL. I then add the silver solution to the Paris white mixture, which is t0.he well stirred together, until it is all perfectly combined. Tlle o liveoil, oil of sassaf'ras, benzine, and ammonia, are then mixed up with the Paris white solution before the silver solution is added. Any vegetable or essential oil maybe used in place of the olive oil and Sassafras. The benzine and ammonia should not be omitted, though an inferiorcompound could be made without them, which would not clean plate as well, and would he more liable to corrode. This compound may he used for cleaning silver-ware, or that composed of any other metal, as copper or its alloys. It is applied directly to the article hy means of cotton flannel, sponge, a soft brush, or other similar means. The article should be Well Washed, and polished with a dry cloth.
What I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described compound for cleaning silver-ware, and cleaning and replating plated ware, or ware made of copper or any of its alloys, or of any other metals or alloys.
