EUGENE GILAIN, OF TIRLEMONT, BELGIUM.
APPARATUS FOR SIMULTANEOUSLY CONTROLLING NUMEROUS OUTLETS BY SINGLE COCKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 650,832, dated June 5, 1900.
Application filed September 24, 1898. Serial No. 691,815. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EUGENE GILAIN, engineer, a subject of the King of Belgium, residing at Tirlemont, in the Kingdom of Belgium, have invented a new and useful Arrangement for Simultaneously Controlling any Number of Outlets by a Single Cock, (for which patents have been filed in Belgium, dated August 5, 1898; in France, dated August 23, 1898; in Italy, dated August 24, 1898; in Sweden, dated August 24, 1898; in Germany, dated August 24, 1898, and in Austria, dated September 9, 1898,) of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is the simultaneous opening or closing of a large number of outlets hitherto controlled by as many cocks as there are outlets by means of a single cock common to all and dispensing with the corresponding large number of cocks, as well as with the expense they involve and the manual labor necessitated thereby.
The new regulating arrangement by means of a single cock is suitable for all apparatus having a series of chambers isolated from one another-such, for example, as pressure-filters, apparatus for electrolysis, condensers, and the like-each section of which is separately controlled by a cock. In the present invention the greater number of these cocks will be replaced by a single cock illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a vertical section; Fig. 2, a horizontal section as applied to a given number of outlet-chambers. Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively a front view of the joint and a transverse section of the cook.
The single cock is composed, substantially, of a rigid metallic pipe A, perforated with holes B B B, placed in a channel 0, formed throughout the length of the apparatus and in its lower part. The pipe A is closed at one of its ends by means of a ball S, the other end communicating through the opening D with a pressure-pump and through the opening D with the atmosphere. On the pipe A an indiarubber tube F of larger diameter is fixed by means of the ligatures g g. Whenever pres sure is applied to the'interior of the tube F by means of any fluid the tube is dilated. The apparatus being thus arranged, if water be injected into the pipe A through the opening D it will run through the openings B B B and inflate the dilatable tube F, which being thus distended will fill the whole cavity of the channel 0 and stop the vents or outlets G G G, which connect the lower part of the frames or sections with the channel 0. It will be readily understood that when the hydraulic cock is openthat is to say, when the tube F is notinflated-the liquidcontained in the frames can run 0% freely through the annular space between the inner wall of the channel O and the outer wall of thedilatable tube F and escape outside by one of the openings M M M Moreover, when the cock is in this condition liquid may be forced into the apparatus through the same way and the latter be charged. The apparatus being filled with liquid, if the dilatable tube of the hydraulic cock be inflated the outlets G G G will be stopped, the apparatus will remain charged, and not a drop of liquid will run off through the frames.
For dismounting the apparatus, filter, press, or osmogene, the hydraulic cock is entirelyremoved from the channel 0, the joint K K being detached.
The, ball S serves as a guide for the hydraulic cock when the latter is either removed from or introduced into the channel 0.
I claim In apparatus for simultaneously controlling any number of outlets by a single cook, the combination with the elastic dilatable tube, of an internal tube made of some rigid material provided with perforations. corresponding to the holes to be closed by the dilatation or to be opened by the deflation of the elastic tube, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
EUGENE IL IN.
