Description
@with tats datent @Hita WILLIAM H. HANHSON, OF- ALBION, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. G5, 076,'cZatecZ Way 28, 1867,
IMPROVED WASHING Macaira @Le .singende netten tu in igcse ztters ntent mit mating part nf tige smite.
TO ALL WHOM Il MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. HANSON, of Albion, in the county of Orleans, iu the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing Machines for washing clothes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in wliieh- Figure 1 is a perspective View.
Figure 2 is a cross-section; and
Figure 3 represents the roller L.
In fig. I, A represents a watortight box, which is divided into two compartments C and D. In the compartment designated by C, is a rotary brush, E, which is as long as the box A is wide on the inside. On the shaft of this brush the cog-wheel F is placed, which is geared into the wheel G. Immediately behind and under this rotary brush is the corrugated board I-I, which contains one or more corrugated rollers I. This boardl swings upon the pin J at the lower side, and is held in place by one or morescrews K, one end of which is hooked into au eye which is in the board II, the other end passes out through the end of vthe box A, and has a nut on it which regulates the position of the board. The screw K is surrounded by a spring which allows the board to yield in one direction. The nut prevents the board from getting too near the brush E. L represents a roller which slides freely under the straps M M, and is provided with a bail or handle, N.
rI`he modo of operating this washing machine is as follows: In the compartment C is placed enough water to partially cover the brush E, the clothes are placed under the roller L and between the board H and the brush E, as indicated by the red lines in iig. 2. Upon turning the crank O, (see ig. 1,) motion is communicated to the brush E, which as it revolves draws the clothes in and removes all dirt. In ease the clothes should be drawn in too rapidly, the roller L is drawn toward the board H which presses the clothes down and retards them. The compartment D is to contain rinsing water.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, arel. I claim the rotary brush E, one or more rollers I, and the screw K, in combination with the corrugated board II, operating in the inannerand for the purpose shown and described.
2. I claim, inv combination with the above, the roller L and the box A, having two compartments C and D substantially as shown and described.
Signed by me this 28th day of February, 1867.
WM. II. HANSON.
