Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. GREENLEL-of New Haven, in the eountyof New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new improvement in Forming the Edge for'Watcr-Proof Soles and I do hereby declare thc following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to he a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part 'of this specification, and represent, in

Figure 1, ajtop view of the leather-preparatory to forming; and in' Figure 2 a like view formed.

This invention relates to an improvement in the manufacture of the soles,-for which Letters Patent were granted to John W. Coburn, assignor to himself and Oliver,F. Case, (one of the assignees in this application,) June 27, 1865, and consists in the peculiar manner ot` forming the edge, whereby a large portion of the stock and much time is saved.

Heretofore the edge has been formed, by cutting from sole-leather, b y dies vor otherwise, into the proper shape, or by taking a strip of sole-leather and forming it in the mould, and sewing ornailing thel two ends: of the strip together. In thc-first manner a portion ot' the stock is necessarily wasted; by thelast, considerable time is necessarily employed to Abring the strip intoproper shape and unite the ends.

` In order to the better understanding'of my invention, as well as to enable others to construct the same, I will proceed to a description, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

From common sole-leather, by the use of dies or otherwise, I out for each sole a piece, A, asseen in fig. 3, the outer measurement of which is nearly the outer measurement of thel edge of the sole to he formed, but somewhat less; the two ends I round from the centres a, in which centres I punch a small hole, and from one centre to the other cut through the leather, as seen in tig. 1, then wetthis piece and place it over a former, which is constructed to correspond to the shape of the sole, as much less inv size than the outer measurement of the sole as the width of the edgc'is to bc. This former is more fully described in my application for Letters Patent which I have filed in even date herewith. The leather is stretched on to the former and dried thereon, so that when it comes from the former it will retain the shape of the former, as seen in fig. 2. I have represented this inanner of forming as but for half-sole, it may, however, be for the whole sole, or for the heel only, it only being required that the piece first cut should be of the proper size, and the former of the proper shape. Thus it will he seen that the edges may be formed very rapidly, in the most perfect manner, in one entire piece, and no waste of stock. Thus formed, the edge is ready to receive the filling.

Having thus `fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- i.

The leather edge for soles, constructed and formed substantially as herein set forth, as an article of manu` facture.
