generator and to stop the supply whenever the gas-holder is sufficiently full, and in addition to this the discharge-pipe from the gas holder is closed in the act of opening the carbid-holder to supply fresh carbid,and the generator is easily separable from the carbid holder, so as to empty the spent car-bid,

The carbid-holder is represented at A, and the cover B thereof is removable, and it is preferably hinged at 3 and provided with a clamping-screw or similar device at 4, and there is an incline at 5, forming the bottom of the carbid-holder, and this is sufficiently steep for the carbid to slide down the same, and there is an opening between the lower end of the inclined bottom and the side of the carbid-holder for the carbid to descend and pass into the rotary feeding device 0, which is in the form of an open cone supported upon a shaft D, and the smaller end of the cone is closely adjacent to the place where the calcium carbid slides off the inclined bottom 5, so that such carbid passes into the rotary feeding device; but the angle of the con-' ical rotary feeding device is such that the carbid will not slide through the same except when the feeding device is partially turned. Hence the feeding device becomes an obstruction to the movement of the calcium carbid except when it is moved, and when a turn or partial turn is given to this feeding device the carbid slides through the open cone there- G between the pipe 6 and the top of; the generator vessel is made with flanges to receive between said flanges a washer of rubber or other material, and the clamping-screws at 7 allow for tightening the joint or for opening the same, so as to separate the generator from the carbid-holder and feeding device for the removal of such generator and the emptying of the spent material.
The generator F is adapted to holding water, and there is Within it the removable basket E,'which is perforated for allowing the water to reach the calcium car-bid, so that as the carbid is dropped from the feeding device 0 into the generator itpasses through the removable basket E and into the water, and the spent material can descend into the bottom of the generator and basket, and after the joint G has been separated and the generator F drawn aside the basket E can be drawn out from the generator and the spent material removed and fresh waterintroduced into the generator and the parts returned into position for use.
The gas-holder 1-1 is in the form of a cylinder closed at the top and open at the bottom, and this is within the water-holding vessel K, as usual, and the holder H rises and falls by the action of the gas Within it, and there is a lever 1, pivoted at 8 and connected by the link 9 to the gas-holder, and there is at the other end a link 10 to the lever K, which has the shaft 16 for its pivot, and there is a ratchetwheel 13 upon the shaft 16 and a pawl 12 upon the lever K, so that by the movement of this lever K the shaft 16 can be turned and the feeding device revolved to a greater or less extent, and it is advantageous to have the gears 14 and 15 to connect the shaft 16 to the shaft D, so that the rotary feeding device Will be turned with the-required rapidity by the fall of the gas-holder for supplying calcium carbid into the generator, and when the gas-holder is rising the pawl 12 will pass down over the teeth of the ratchet-wheel without turning the carbid-holder.
The gas as generated passes up through the carbid-holder A to the pipe 18, and this descends and passes into the coil 19 at the bottom of the water in the vessel K, and the vertical pipe 20 opens into the gas-holder H, preferably above the water-line, and the gas passes off by the pipe 21 and rising pipe 22 to the place where the gas is consumed, and it is sometimes advantageous to employ a cock 23 at the bottom of the pipe 22 to let out any fluid of condensation, and the cock 2t at the lower end of the gas-pipe 18 is provided for a similar object.
The cock M is provided in the gas-pipe l8, and a handle L to the cock extends out over the cover B, so that as such coverB is swung back the cock M is closed automatically in case the attendant fails to turn off the cock M before opening the carbid-holder. This prevents the gas from the holder H passing back and escaping through the cock M. A branch pipe 25, connecting with the gas-pipe below the cock M, passes into the water-tank K, and there is above its lower end the escapepipe 26. These are preferably at a pocket on the side of the said tank, and into this pocket the water of the tank passes and forms a seal to the lowerend of this pipe 25, so that if the pressure becomes excessive in the generator the gas may pass oil through the safety-pipe 25 and into the pocket and escape by the pipe 26, and thus prevent undue pressure in the apparatus. I have represented the pivot 8 as supported upon the pipe 18.
In Fig. (5 the parts before mentioned are simply duplicated, with the two rotary feeding devices 0 0' upon the shaft D, which is made longer, the larger ends of the conical rotary feeding devices coming opposite each other, so that the carbid is discharged toward the center, and there may be segmental chutes 27 at the entrance to the rotary feeding devices, so as to direct the carbid into the smaller end of the conical feeding device.
I claim as my invention- 1.. The combination with the generator and the carbid-holder, of an incline within the holder between the lower edge of which and theholder there is a discharge-'openin g, ahorizontal shaft passing through the holder, an open-ended cone forming a feeding device mounted upon said shaft with the smaller end toward the said discharge-opening, and means for feeding the carbid into the cone, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with the generator and the carbid-holder, of an incline within the holder between the lower edge of which and the holder there is a discharge-opening,ahorizontal shaft passing through the holder, an open-ended cone forming a feeding device mounted upon said shaft with the smaller end toward the said discharge-opening, and a segmental chute 27 below the discharge-opening with the free end projecting into the cone for feeding the carbid into the cone, substantially as specified.
3. The combination with the generator and the carbid-holder, of a double incline Within the holder between the lower edges of which and the holder are narrow discharge-0penings, a horizontal shaft passing through the holder, two open-ended cones forming feeding devices mounted upon said shaft with the larger ends in opposition and the smaller ends toward the said discharge-openings, and means for feeding the carbid into the cones, substantially as specified.
4. The combination with the generator and the carbid-holder, of a double incline within the holder between the lower edges of which and the holder are narrow discharge-openings, a horizontal shaft passing through the holder, two open-ended cones forming feeding devices mounted upon said shaft with the larger ends in opposition and the smaller ends toward the said discharge-openings and segmental chutes 27 below the said dischargeopenings with the free ends projecting into the cones for feeding the carbid into the cones, substantially as specified.
