This invention relates to acetylene gas generators and has for its principal object to provide a'simple and efficient mechanism for automatically controlling the feed of carbid.
Another object is the provision of means for adjusting the valve mechanism which feeds the carbid so that the amount of the carbid discharged, when the valve mecha nism is automatically operated, is controlled. p
A further object is to provide a valve mechanism for feeding the carbid which will automatically adjust itself to allow grains of carbid of different sizes to pass around the same. p
A still further object-is the provision of an acetylene gas generator in which the parts are so constructed and arranged as to be readily separated to permit cleaning thereof.
l/Vith these and other objects in View, the invention consists .of the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Referring in detail to the drawing, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates a cylindrical liquid container including a bottom 6 and having an opened upper end. A
plurality of supports 7 are formed with an-' gularly directed lower extremities engaged upon the upper surface of the container bot tom 6 and are secured at said upper end to an inverted frusto-conical carbid holder 8 having an opening 9 in the lower end thereof adapted to be closed by a valve 10 carrying an upwardly extending stem 11. The stem 11 extends upwardly through an aperture 12 in the top of the carbid holder 8 and through a sleeve 13 secured to the top of said carbid' holder and carriesa cup-shaped plate 14: at its upper end. The valve stem 11 is provided adjacent the upper end thereof with screw-threads on which is lit ted a stop collar 15. for variably adjusting the downward movement of the valve 10, saidstop collar 15 has a rounded lower portion 16 which is adapted to be swivelly received in the flared top 17 formed on the sleeve 13, when the valve 10 is unseated so that the valve is free to oscillate a certain distance permitting alarge piece of carbid to pass by. the valve on one side, while a smaller piece is passingby on the other side. Secured to the under face of the top ofthe carbid holder 8 and-around the aperture 12 is an inverted cone-shaped casing 18 which surrounds the valve stem 11 and spaces the carbid therefrom and allows the valve stem 11 to oscillate as hereinbefore described. A circular deflector plate 19 is secured to the bottom of the valve 10 andhas the outer edges thereof projecting slightly outward of the valve 10 and has a relatively narrow and horizontally disposed bar 20 secured thereto, which is connected adjacent its ends with the carbid holder 8 by springs 21 normally retaining the valve 10 in closed position.
. A tray 22 is removably disposed upon the bottom 6 of the liquid container between the supports 7 and is provided with a chain 23 constituting a handle, whereby the tray may be conveniently withdrawn from the container.
The liquid container 5 is filled with water approximately to the line designated by the numeral 2% and a bell 25 is fitted within the container and its apron or side wall extends below the water lever as will be understood. The bell surrounds the carbid holder 8, supports 7 and tray 22.
An air exhaust pipe 26 is extended through pipe 29 is secured through the Wall of the container 5, and is provided With a valve 30 and is extended upwai"dly"yvi'tliin the bell 25 and the opened end 31 thereof terminates above the end 28 of the air exhaust pipe 26.
p In use, it Will be evident that as the bell 25 lowers due to the fall'of the gas pressure therein, the rounded knob 32 carried by the top of the bell Will engage and depress the stem 11 together with the valve 10, thus opening the valve and permitting the carbid Within the holder 8 to flow over the deflector plate 19 from wh'ere'it drops into the Water contained in the container and into the tray 22. As the carbid enters the Water, acetylene gas is generated and the increasing volu'me thereof elevates the bell 25, disengaging the valve stem 11 and permits the valve to move to closed position under the influence oi the springs 21. The air Which accumulates Within the bell when the generato'r is not in use may be exhausted through the pipe 26 by opei'iing the valve 27 for a short'time after the generator is set in operation.
It is clearly evident that the several parts of the generator may be q'uicklyan'd conveniently removed from the'conta'in'erb to permit thorough cleaning thereof.
\Vhat I claim is:
1-. An acetylene gas generator including a liquid container, a c'arbid holder supported in said container having an opening in the lower end thereof, a valve for closing said opening, means normally retaining said valve in closed position, a bell in'closing said carbid holder, a stem projecting upwardly through said carbid holder, a cup-sha ped plate carried by the free end of said valve stem, a rounded knob carried by the top of said bell and in direct alinement With said bid holder, a stem projecting upwardly.

An acetylene gas generator including a liquid container, a carbid holder supported in said container having an opening in the lower end thereof, a valve for closing said opening, means normally retaining said Valve in closed position, 'a bellinclosing said carbid holder, a stem projecting upwardly through said carbid holder adapted to be engaged by said bell to open said valve, a sleeve having a flared top secured to the top of said carbid holder and having the bore thereof registering with said aperture, a stop collar 'adjustably carried by'sa'i'd valve stem, said stop collar having a rounded end adapted'to fit in the flared end of said sleeve, whereby said valve stem is free to oscillate, so that dilferent sized pieces of'c'arbid may pass around said valve.
