TOY cannon.
SPECIFICATION forming part er Letters Patent No. 650,633, dated May 29. 1900.
Application mea August 29, 189e.
Bia-known that we, THOMAS DAvnY COOPER, a resident of Cross Roads, and SAM LAW,a. resident of Hermit Hole, both near Keighley,in the county of York, England,
l subjects-of the Queen of Great Britain, have our invention.
invented `a new or Improved Toy Cannon, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates tol a new or improved ,nnon, and has for its object the produc.- tio of a cannon and parts in connection therewith of such construction as to iit same for theefirercise of skill and judgment on the partv of theY user when desirous of hitting a given -mark by the projectile. To attain this object, we make use of the means and devices .hereinaftensdescribed-ande illustrated by the accompanying sheets of drawings, which form lpart' of this specification, and wherein-.-
Figures l and 2 are an elevation and a longitudinal section of a cannon and parts in connection therewith made in accordance with Fig. 3 is aplan of parts shown by Figs. 1 and 2. Figs. and 5 are an elevation and a plan, respectively, of a modified device by which th'e force for sending the projectile may be transmitted, as hereinafter described. Figs. 46 and 7 are an elevation and a plan illustrating in detail means whereby the cannon may be adjusted in position. Fig. S
,is an elevation illustrating a modified form of means for adjusting the cannon in place of those shown by Figs. 6 and 7.
In carrying our invention into eifectwe mount the barrel a. upon its pivotal bearings b inthe well-known manner, its inclination thereon to the horizontal plane being eithereffected and regulated bythe Wedge c, Fig. 8, which is old and well knownJ or thearm d, having a spring e and bolt f, which forces it against the side of the bearings b to cause sufficient friction between the m to enable said .arm d to maintain and support the barrel a Serial No. 728,825. (No model.)
well as the adjustment of the barrel in proper position, entails the exercising of more skill than would be the case Were the force transmitted by the air to be effected by means that might be more accurately regulated.
The interior or bore of the barrel a is lined with glasslpr4 other smooth substance to reduce friction, while the sighting-pieces ps are mounted on said lbarrel to enable it to be directed as desired, the piece p being preferably movable in a lateral direction in the slot @c for adjustment when manufacturing the barrel.
It will be seen that instead of striking the ball 7c directly with the hand an interceding lever i? may be mounted at w to the bearings fcto receive the blow, while a spring o is employed for bringing said lever into its normal position when free.
Such being the nature and object of our invention, what w'e claim is l. In a toy cannon, a pivotally-supported barrel, in combination with a pivotally-supported arm the outer end of which extends hunder the barrel, spring mechanism forfrictionally holding the arm to control the elevation of the barrel, andfrneans for forcing a current lof air through said barrel.
2. In a toy cannon, the combination with a pivotallyfsupported barrel, of a detachable plug fitting the breech of the barrel, air-forcing means, and a iiexible air-conduit between said air-forcing means and the plug.
In testimony whereof We have aliixed our signatures in presencel of two witnesses.
