UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
axis on on. ENGINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 650,571, dated May 29, 1900.
Application filed August 5, 1898.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HADWEN SWAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas or Oil Engines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it most nearly appertains to make, use, and practice the same.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the engine; Fig. 2, an end view of part of sparking device; Fig. 3, perspective of sparking-point; Fig. 4, enlarged detail of sparking device; Fig. 5, sectional detail of governing device.
In Fig. 1, g represents the two-to-one cam that operates the exhaust-valve in most gasengines. As I make no claim on this mechanism, connections and valve are not shown. A crank-pin located on this cam operates the connecting-rod n, which is pivoted to e. The latter slides freely back and forth inside the pipe 70, one end of which is supported by the bracket m and the other pivoted to the lever It at the point j. The lever his a bent lever, with a pivot at t' and the outer end impinging on the inlet-valve 2f. lVhen 7c is given a back-and-forth motion, it causes t to open, a spring closing it. There is no direct connection between 7.; and e, operated by the rod 11, th e connection being made byinterposing Z,which is connected to the governor and which is by preference wedge-shaped, in a slot through and e. The slot in e is longer than the width of Z, so it only impinges on the latter when it nears one end of the stroke. Z in turn be ing forced against one side of the slot in 70 gives the latter a forward-and-back motion, different positions of 1, should this latter be wedge-shaped, giving more or less opening to the inlet-valve t, according to the speed of the engine, thus regulating it.
To the free end of e is fastened the arm cl, to the top of which is pivoted the sparkinghammer 0 10 at 61'. During most of the stroke 1) is held firmly against the stop f by the spring a sliding back and forth on it when operated by 02. During the remainder of the stroke the latch 12, having an incline at one Serial No. 687,877, (No model.)
end impinging against the incline v on 1), causes the latter to rise up until it is pulled off the edge of b, when the tension of the spring 0 causes it to fall and deliver a blow on s.
The shaft .9 passes through part of the engine into the exploding-port, preferably into the inlet-port, and carries on its inner end the sparking-point r, the spark being made by the contact of the point on r and the adjusting-screw q. Fastened to the outer end of s is s, which has an extension at its lower end for the purpose of attaching the spring a, the outer end of which is attached to b and serves to keep the latter in an upright position against the stop a, but allows b to describe part of a circle to escape 1; during the backward stroke of p. The springuis lighter than c, and when p raises it causes 3 to follow 19 until 1- touches q, when 19 leaves 5 and still lifts a slight amount before dropping oif of Z) and driving 8 back to its original position by the extra weight of the spring 0, thus producing the spark, the shaft 8' having a slight oscillating movement. In order to time the move 13 forward or back, to serving to hold 2' from jarring out of position.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to cover by Letters Patent is as follows:
1. In a gas or oil engine a connecting-rod n operated bya crankand a sliding rod e operating the sparking-hammer 29 having an incline o in combination with latch b operating sparking-point 0" through rockshaft 3' and s substantially as described.
2. In a gas or oil engine a connecting-rod n and a sliding rod e together with the latch 11 having stop a and flexibly connected to part 8 in combination with sparking-hammer p operated by a spring a substantially as de scribed.
3. In a gas or oil engine a connecting-rod or operated by a crank and a sliding rod 6, operating the sparking-hammerbp, having an incline o operated by a latch i with an adjusting-screws with tightener 10' substantially as described.
