Description

H. FAYETTE.
WOODEN PAVEMENT.
Patented May 21, 1867.
gnitzh tans gaunt ff'irn.
HENRY FAYETTE, OF PDRT CHESTER, NEW YORK- Letters'Patent dated May 21,1867.
- mrsovsn woonsn .PAvEMENn;
TO ALL WHOM IT- MAY GONQERN I Best known that LHENRI'FAYiTTE, of Port Chester in the county of Westc'hesteg'and State of NewYojrk; have invented a new and useful improvement in Wooden Pavements';.and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and enact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying diawings", ardto' the letters of reference marked thei'eon.
The nature of my'invention consists in forming sections of pavement by 'bolting firmly together a nu uber of wooden blocks by means of rods or bolts running" through said sectionstransversely toeach other, in d in looking said sections together by means of tongues and grooves, as hereinafter described In the accompanying drawings, A and B representtwo sections of pavement, consistingeach of ten hi 'cks' of wood, bolted togetherby means of bolts running through said sections transversely 'to-each other; In section A there is a horizontal grcove,a, across two opposite sides and one end, and a projecting tonguc b, across the opposite end. Section B has the. projecting tonguej-nntwo opposite; sidesfian'd one a groove a, acrosstlie other endsv v 7 It will'beseen that'when these sections are laid down to formal-pavement the tongues of one section will fit into the grooves of adjoining sections, so that 'any pressure upon any one section will be communicated to and supportedby every adjoining section. Instead of arranging the tongues and grooves as shown in the drawings, it ismanifest that vthe same *efi'ect maybe produced by making a groove on one sidet'a'nd one' end of each section; or by making the sections-alternately with tJngueson eachside and grooves at the ends,'and grooves 'each side and tongues at the ends; or by' arranging said tongues and'grooves in any other-Lway so that each side andend of. each section will-be locked with an adjoiningsection by'mea n s of a tongue and groove fitting together. illhesmall bloclis composing eachsection may besecuredtogether by bolts passing through each alternate tier, as'shown in the drawings, or by one or tw o bolts through. ach tier. The-bolts may be of either metal or wood. The-tongues are formed by'bolting,"sp'i king; ,or screwing on fag-the sections suitably-formed strips of wood. p
In this application I do not claim anything'on the within described mode of forming sections ofpavement by bolting together a number of wooden blocks, as that is covered byanothen application of minejnow pending in the'Patent Oflice; but .what I do claiinas my invention, and desire to secureby Letters Ifatent,
1. Locking together sections of wooden pavement by means of tongnesand'g'rooves so arranged thateach section willbe'sunported by every adjoining section; substantially as'describe'dl' v I y 2. I also-olefin sections of pavement composed of wooden blocks bolted together as described; and provided vwith tongues and grooves soarran ed that when laid down in a pavement each section will be locked with all the adjoining sections'by means of said-tongues andigrooves, substantially asdescribed.
