ROBERT BURGESS, OF NE\V BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE DRAPER COMPANY, OF PORTLAND, MAINE, AND HOPEDALE, MASSA- CIIUSETTS.
ATTACHMENT FOR SPINNING-FRAMES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters iatent No. 649,397, dated May 8, 1900.
A plication filed March 8, 1900- Serial No. 7,796- (No model.)
To all whom it 771/661] concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT-BURGESS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Bedford, county of Bristol, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Attachments for Spinning-Frames, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification; like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
In ring-spinning frames the inside flanges of the rings frequently become gummed up by dirt, especially when oil is used on the rings, and it is a very difficult matter to properly clean them without removing them from the rail-a slow and tedious operation.
My present invention has for its object the production of an attachment for spinningframes whereby the rings can be rapidly and thoroughly cleaned in sil'u by the usual operation of the frame.
The attachment embodying my invention comprehends, essentially, a body, which is preferably a bobbin provided with laterallyextended flexible projections to engage the interior portions of a ring when the attachment is placed on the cooperating spindle, the projections brushing over the interior surface of the ring when the spindle is rotated and thoroughly and rapidly removing dirt, oil, 830.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a spinning-frame of usual construction with my attachment in position to clean the rings; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation, partly broken out, of an attachment embodying one form of my invention.
Referring to Fig. 1, the frame A, spindlerail B, the spindles S, rotatably mounted thereon and driven in usual manner, the vertically-reciprocating ring-rail R, provided with the rings R the lifter-rods R, and the lifter-arms D, actuated by suitable winding mechanism M through the chain D and rocker-arm D are and may be of usual or well-known construction and operated in the usual manner.
In accordance with myinvcntion I provide an attachment (shown separately in Fig. 2) consisting of a body portion a, preferably made as a bobbin of usual construction, provided with a longitudinal bore a to receive and frictionally engage the spindle-blade. The bodyis provided with suitable laterally extended cleaning projections to engage the interior portions of the ring when the attachment is in use, and heroin I have shown such projections as bristles b, which may be ar ranged in tufts suitably secured to the body a. These tufts of bristles are shown as ar-' ranged spirally around the body and projecting laterally therefrom, and I also provide an aunularly=arranged series b Fig. 2, which are shown as upwardly and outwardly in clined. The length of the projectionsb or b is sufficient to engage theinteriorsurface and flange portion of the ring when the attachment is placed on the spindle, as shown in Fig. 1, and thereupon the frame is started up, the rotation of the spindles and traverse of the ring-rail acting to thoroughly clean the rings.
It is preferable to mountone of the attachments on each of a number of spindles to expedite the cleaning, though it will be manifest that, if. desired, one at a time may be used, and so, too, spinning may be carried on with some spindles while the rings of others are being cleaned.
My invention is not restricted to the pre cise construction herein shown and described, as the same may be modified or rearranged in various particulars without departing from the'spirit and scope of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. A spindle-rail, a series of rotatable spin dies mounted thereon, a traversing ring-rail provided with rings, and ring-cleaners detachably mounted on the spindles and provided with laterally-extended flexible projections to engage and clean the rings as the ring=rail is traversed.
2. In a spinning-frame, spindles, atraversing ring-rail having rings mounted thereon,-
and a series of bobbins adapted to be mounted on the spindles and provided each with laterally-extended bristles to en gage and clean the interior of the rings when the ring-rail is traversed.
3. Anattachmentforring-spinningframes, comprising a body having a central bore to receive the spindle-blade, and a series of flexible cleaning projections arranged upon and extended laterally from the bobbin, to clean the interior of a ring when the attachmentis applied to its cooperating spindle.
4. Anattachmentforring-spinningframes, comprisinga bobbin centrally bored to receive a spindle-blade and having a spirally-arrangedand laterally-extended series of bristies mounted thereon to clean the interior of a ring when applied to its cooperating spin- J. W. WEBSTER, P. G. IIOLMEs.
