IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM GENERATCRS.
@te tlgehnle referat itin tlgesc @titers iitent :mh mating pitt nf file smne.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known. that I, S. M. COLBURN, of AnSOni'a-,inthe countyof New Haven, and State. of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Steam Boilers and I do hereby declare ,the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings'and the letters of reference marked", thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of thesame, and which said drawings'constitute'part of tiiis specification, and represent, in-v- Figure 1, a longitudinal centralsection, and in Figure 2 a transverse section. Y This invention relates to an improvement in the construction of common cylinder' boilers, designed more particularly for boilers for river boats, the object being to prevent the sediment from settling directly upon the cylinder and over the lire surface, and to aiiord a means for removing the sediment from the boiler by the current created by-drawing the water from the boiler; and consists in a plate running longitudinally through the boiler, and located near the bottom, so as to form a chamber between the said plate and the inner surface of' the boiler, vand the same chamber communicating with the boiler through spaces or perforations formed at the edge of the said plate, and so that the sediment or mud would collect upon the top ofthe said plate.
In order to the better understanding of my invention, as Well as to enable others to construct the same, I will proceed to a description, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
- Ais a horizontal boiler, of any. desired form or construction. B is a plate of metal running nearly or lquite the entire length of the boiler, and made crowning-as in iig. 2, for its own support, and of a Width equal to about oneeighth the circumference, may be more or less, and isplaced Within the boiler at the bottom side and formedso. as t0 leave openings a communicating from the boiler proper to the space. or chamber C, below the plate B, or the plate may be perforated near its edge.\ D, the outlet for drawing theiwater off from the boiler, opens into the chamber C, as seen in iig. 1. Y The boiler being filled in the usual manner the space C readily ills through the openings and the sediment or mnd in the water above, instead orn settling directly upon the surface of the boiler, as in boilers of common construction, falls upon the upperside of the plate B, and thus leaves the surface of the boiler direct-ly over the {ii-c free for the full action of the fire and without injury to the boiler, as there un'avoidably is where the sediment is permitted to settle directly on to the boiler. Having settled upon the plate B, whenever it is desired toA remove the mud or sediment therefrom, open the draw-olil D, which at once creates strong current over the plate B and through the openings a in the edge of the said plate, sufficient to draw the mud or sediment from the said plate, and being drawn into the chamber C it quickly and readily passes off at the draw-'oli'. Thus, While form a protection against injury to the boiler from the fire, I at thesame time produce a ready means for removing the mud or sediment therefrom.
'I do not Wish to be understood as broadly claiming removing the sediment by creating a current Within the boiler, but having thus fully described my invention, what I do claim as lnew and useful, and desire to secure by Lettersy Patent, is-
The plate B, constructed and arranged'yvithinthe boiler so as to form a chamber, C, communicating with the boiler by means of openings or perforationsdp-substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
