Be it known that I, OTTOG. OsT, of Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Scalfold-Clamps; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a side view of a scaffold employing clamps embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a side view of one of the clamps with one of the plates removed; Fig. 3, 'a top or plan view of my improved support; Fig.4, a perspective view of the clamps detached; Fig. 5, a side view of a tie-rod adapted to be used in connection with my clamp; Fig. 6, a front View showing two of the clamps with a ledger in This invention relates in scaffold-clamps, and particularly to that class which are adapted for use in connection with upright supports, so as to avoid the new cessity of tying or nailing the ledgers and put-logs to the uprights and to each other, and so as to facilitate the erection of staging and avoid the destruction of the timbers used in forming the scaffold, the object of the invention being to produce a clamp which will be rigidly held in position and easily applied; and it consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claims. 7
The lower ends of the upright supports A are set into the ground or otherwise held in position, and to these supports I attach clamps or clevises, each consisting of two plates C D, adapted to be placed against opposite sides of the support. These plates are formed with bolt-openings E for the reccptionof a bolt F, and their inner ends are set inward, forming shoulders G for the forward edge of the support, and the extreme forward ends H are also formed with openings for a tie-bolt I. Preferably, also, the inner faces of the plates D will be formed with projections or teeth a, adapted to bite into the sides of the uprights A. Depending from the tie-bolt I are two hooks J, adapted to receive the led gers K, and these ledgers form a support for the put-logs L,
to an improvement the inner ends of which have a bearing int-he wall of the building against which the scaffold is erected. Over these put-logs planks M are placed in the usual manner. To prevent the accidental displacement of the ledgers K, I preferably provide safety-pieces N, which are suspended from the tiebolts I and comprise at the lower end a yoke adapted to set over the ledgers K and so as to prevent the ledger-s from being lifted out of the hooks J. The clamp or clevis is readily attached to the uprights at. the desired points through the medium of the bolts F, and by loosening the end of the said bolt the clamp may be detached and adjusted as required. To hold the supports in proper position, braces may be provided, which consist of rods 0, formed at one end with eyes Pfor engagement with the tiebolt I and adapted at its other end to be inserted through the wall or other part of the building and receive a nut Q, by which it is held in place. It will thus be seen that with clamps of this character a scaffold may be readily erected or removed and without injuring the timbers used for the uprights and ledgers.
It will be understood from the foregoing that I am aware that clamps adapted to accomplish this same result, so far as avoiding nailing is concerned, are old, and I therefore do not wish to be understood as claiming, broadly, such as my invention.
I-Iavin g f ully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A scaffold clamp consisting of two plates having their inner ends set inward, the opposite ends of said plates adapted to receive bolts, whereby the plates are clamped in position, and ledger-hookssuspended from the bolt at the inner ends of the clamp, substantially as described.
2. A scaffold-clamp comprising two plates having their inner ends setinward, the opposite ends of said plates adapted to receive bolts, whereby the plates are clamped in position, ledger-hooks suspended from the bolt at the inner ends of the clamp, and a safetyyoke also suspended from said bolt, substantially as described.
3. A scaffold-clamp comprising two plates v having their inner ends set inward, the opposite ends of Saidplates adapted to receive bolts whereby the plates are clamped in p0- sition, ledger-hooks suspended from the bolt at the inner endsiof the clamp, and a. tie-rod formed at one end fer engagement with the said bolt at the inner ends'of the clamp and at its opposite end for engagement Witha Wall, 7
