DIE ADJUSTER OR FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 647,367, dated April 10, 1900.

Application filed March 31, 1899.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that LGEORGE W. BLAKESLEE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Plantsville, in-the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain novel, useful, and valuable Improvements in Die Adjusters or Fasteners, which I desire to secure by United States Letters Patent; that my knowledge of these improvements I wish, in order to cover same by Letters Patent, to publicly divulge in accordance with law, and that therefore the following and the annexed drawings and characters of reference thereon are provided for inspection and by me hereby declared to constitute, when taken together, a specification of the said improvements, replete, explicit, and exact, sufficiently to enable any person versed in the art to which my invention appertains to perform the same.

My invention relates to die adjusters or fasteners, has for its object to provide a die adjuster or fastener which shall be inexpensive, simple, effective, and applicable to orworking presses, and consists in what will dinary drop forging machines and metalbe hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the said drawings, the numeral 1 designates the ordinary die-holder.

2 designates the die.

3 designates the usual key or wedge.

4 is a bar, bolt, or slide placed in the dieholder below the die in a channel 5 so formed as to permit the part 4 to be moved laterally as well as longitudinally. This lateral move ment is necessary to permit the die to be taken from the holder, as will soon be easily perceived. The bar, bolt, or slide 4 I connect with the die, preferably by a pin 6, which is rigidly secured to the part 4 and loosely entered inthe die. It is apparent that for convenience and cheapness in the construction of the parts 2, 4, and 6 they should be separately formed, but not essentially so. The

bar, bolt, or slide 4 is threaded at each end, as at 7, and provided on each threaded portion with a nut 8. Washers which I preferably interpose between the said nuts and the die-holder are designated by the numerals. By manipulating the said nuts the die can be adjusted or locked againstlongitudinal movement. By manipulating either one of the said nuts when the other is loosened the die can be moved or locked against longitudinal movement.

Having, as I believe, sufficiently describedmy invention, I will now proceed to state what I think is new and desire to secure by Letters Patent. I claim as patentable and desire to cover- 1. The combination of a die-holder, a die,

and a laterally and longitudinally movable bar in said die-holder and connected with said die, whereby the die can be moved in said holder, substantially as described.

2. The combination of a die-holder, a die, a laterally and longitudinally movable bar in said die-holder and connected with said die, whereby the die can be-moved in said holder, and screw means for moving said bar, substantially as described.

3. The combination of a die-holder, a die, a longitudinally-movable bar connected with the said die, in said holder and projecting beyond the die at opposite sides or ends thereof, whereby the die can be horizontally moved in two directions in said holder, said bar provided with a threaded portion and a threaded nut loosely placed thereon, by manipulating which said nut the said bar can be moved, and means independent of said bar whereby the die can be locked in said holder, substantially as described.

4. The combination of a die-holder, a die, a longitudinally movable bar in said dieholder, whereby the die can be moved, a pin connection between the die and bar, and means independent of said bar whereby the die can be locked in the die-holder, substantially as described.

5. The combination of a die-holder, a die, a longitudinally-movable bar whereby the die can be moved, a pin connection between the die and bar, and screw means for moving the bar, substantially as described.

6. The combination of a die-holder, a die,

a longitudinally-movable bar whereby the die can be moved, a pin connection between the die and bar, screw means for moving the bar, and means independent of the bar for looking the die in its holder, substantially as described.

7. The combination of the die-holder having the chamber which contains and permits the bar to be moved longitudinally, the die, the bar, the pin connection between the die and bar, and a threaded nut on the bar, whereby it can be moved, substantially as described.

8. The combination of a die-holder, a die, a longitudinally-movable bar connected with the said die and in said die-holder, whereby the die can be moved, or held against movement, in two directions in said holder, the said die having a dovetail portion, as shown, the said die-holder having a dovetailed chamber adapted to receive the said portion. of the said die, as shown, a key or wedge, as shown, whereby the die can be locked in said holder, and screw means for moving or looking the said bar against movement, substantially as set forth.
