Description

STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOS. W. BRIGGS, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
HAME.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 6,465, dated May 22, 1849.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOSEPH IV. BRIGGS, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Combined Horse- Collar 'and Hame, of which the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings of the same making part of this specication, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the hames and cliffs detached fromthe padding; Fig. 2 is a View of the hames, tugs, and padding complete, and in connection; Fig. 3 is a View of a hame with my improvements applied thereto and which is adapted to a common collar.
The several parts are designated by the same letters in all the figures.
The nature ofmy invention and improvement consists in so constructing and arranging the cliff, and padded haines, that the latter will at all times when the horse is pulling, lay fiat and press equally upon every part of his shoulders and breast which it overlies, which is the only certain and effectual way in which they can be prelvented from being pressed and galled.
The hame (a) may be made of any kind of metal and is bent into the form represented, being rather more curvedpat the top which rest-s upon the neck, and at the bottom which rests against the breast of the horse, than the common collar hame. At
the proper po-int to apply.V the draft two ears (b) project from the front side of the -hame leaving a space between them suflicient to insert that part of the cliff (o) which forms the hinge, and through which as well as through the ears the joint pins (e) are inserted, these ear pieces being wide, and t-he ends of the cliff fitting acurately between them, it is plain that the llame cannot turn around vertically, without the cliffs also turning in the same direction, the clill is however prevented from turning by its resting against the side of the horse at its rear end where the buckle and loops (1") are formed, but while the liame is thus held flat upon the shoulder of the horse the hinge allows it to turn freely to accomodate itself so far as may be necesary or desirable to the changing positions of his shoulder when in motion. The front end of the cliff (c) is bowed outward that it may avoid chafing the horses shoulder. In the concave side of this bow the ring (s) is secured to which the st-ay strap is attached, by this arrange ment the force which is applied to this strap is to a great extent directly sustained by the tugs, belly band, and pad.
Vhat I claim as my invent-ion and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Hinging the cliffs to the hame and extending them back to the girth substantially as herein described, for the purpose of holding` the hame Hat against and in contact with the entire length of the shoulder of the horse in every posit-ion he may assume, while in the act of pulling.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and aiIiXed my seal this second day of October A. D. 1848.
JOSEPH W. BRIGGS.
