UNITED STATES PATENT Fries.
HENRY. A. HEMPEL, OF GOTHA, FLORIDA.
PESSARY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 646,073, dated March 27, 1900. Application filed July 17, 1899. fierial No. 724,037. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. HEMPEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gotha, in the county of Orange and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pessaries, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object the production of a pessary which is simple in construction and convenient in use.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved pessary having the form of a six-sided body resembling a cube. Fig. 2 is a central section through the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of my improved pessary having a globular form. Fig. 4 is a central section through the same.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
In Figs. 1 and 2, A represents the body of the pessary, having approximately the outlines of a cube or of a regular body presenting six square faces, Each of these faces is provided with a cavity or depression a, which extends inwardly or toward the core or central portion bof the body. These cavities are so shaped that they will properly receive the neck of the womb. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 they are pyramidal in form, each having four sides which converge inwardly or toward the core I) of the body. This core may be imperforate, as shown in these figures, or it may be perforate, as may be preferred.-
In the construction represented in Figs. 3
and 4 the body A is approximately globular in form and is provided with a suitable number of faces each provided with an inwardlyextending depression or cavity 0. As shown in these figures the depressions are approximately conical in form, and the core or central portion at is provided with an aperture e.
My improved pessary is preferably constructed of soft or comparatively-soft rubber. Upon inserting the same it presents one of its recessed faces or cavities to the neck of the womb and adjusts itself to the same, so that no difticultyis experienced in placing it in the proper position for supporting the neck of the womb, While the adjoining parts enter the other cavities to a greater or less extent and hold the pessary in position.
I claim as my invention 1. A pessary composed of a body having regular outlines and a plurality of like faces, each formed as a supporting depression or cavity, whereby the pessary can be inserted with either of its faces presented upward, substantially as set forth.
2. A pessary composed of a body having six like faces, each formed by a tapering depression or cavity extending toward the central portion or core of the body, substantially as set forth.
Witness my hand this 8th day of July, 1899.
HENRY A. HEMPEL.
