TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, ELISIIA S. SAOKETT, of Monroe, in the county of Green, and Stato of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machine for'Forming Boilers for Cooking-Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a top view of my improved apparatus. i
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same taken through the line :r fe, tig. 1.
Figure 3 is a cross-section of the same taken through the line y y, g. 2.
Figure '4 isa detail sectional View of the same taken through lthe line z z, fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. y
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved apparatus by means of which the'bodies of'sheetmetal boilers for cooking-stoves may be formed conveniently and accurately; and it consists of a groo'ved andnotched former made in the shape and size of the desired boiler body, and a grooved or notched board or plank to be used in connection with said former.
A is the former, the two end-pieces al and a2 of which are of the required shape and size ot' themtended boiler. These pieces are connected at their edges to each other by the posts or bars a3, which may be set close together around the ends'of the endpieces al and a2, leaving vacant spaces at the sides, as shown in igs. 1 and 2, or a narrow space may be left between each pair of the said posts or bars. If desired, the former A may be made of a solid block or a close box. Around the edge of the former A is formed a groove, ai, to receive the wired edge of the sheet or sheets of which the boiler is to be made. The edge of the former A is also notched to receive one leg of the clamps C, by which the said sheet is secured to the said former. These notches are covered with small plates a, the outer surface of which is at the same Velevation as the bottom of the groove aa is a lock or. catch attached to the side of the former A for holding the end edge of thesheet from which the body of the boiler is to be formed while'said body is being formed. B is the board, plank, or bench upon which the sheet or sheets from which the boiler is to be formed is extended. This board or plank B must be of a length and breadth corresponding with the size of the required boiler. Along the upper surface of the board or plank B, near its edge, is formed a groove, b1, to receive thewired edge of the sheet metal. In the edge of the board or plank B are also formed notches b2, at such distances apart as shall correspond with the notches' in the former A. These notches are designed to receive the lower legs of the clamps C when said clamps are applied to secure the sheet metal to its place upon the said former A, as shown in tig. 3. One end ofthe board or plank B may also be notched or grooved, as shown at b3 in figs. 1 and 2, to receive the lock or catch a6.
' In using the apparatus, the metal sheets are soldered together, if necessary, so as to form a sheet of'suthcient length to form the body of the required boiler. The wire to stiffen the upper edge of the boiler is then applied to the sheet throughout its entire length, in the usual way. The sheet thus prepared is extended along the board or plank B in such a way thatthe wired edge of said sheet may rest in the groove lvl. The former A is then placed upon the metal sheet in such a position that the groove a4 may receive the wired edge ofthe sheet, and so that the lock or catch a may enter the notch or groove 6G. The end edge of the metal sheet is then inserted in the lock or catch a, and secured in place by a clamp, C. Tile former A is then rolled along the plank or board, and the sheet secured by the clamps C as often as the notches prepared for them are reached. When the lock or catch a5 meets the other end of the sheet, the two ends of the said sheet may be soldered' together in the ordinary manner, and the formation of the body of the boiler is completed.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The former A, when made substantially as herein shown and described and for the purpose set forth.
Q.' The grooved and notched board, plank, or bench B, when made substantially as herein shown and described, in combination with the former A, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the clamp C with the former A, substantially as herein described and for the purpose set forth. i i
