Be it known that I, \VINFRED JONES, of the city of Rochester, county of Monroe, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gages, which is fully set forth and described in the-following specification taken in connection with the drawin gs which form a part thereof, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the underside of the gage. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the upper side of the gage, and Fig. 3 an end view of the knife-carrying cylinder.
In all the figures similar letters of reference represent like parts.
My invention relates to an improvement in gages, and more particularly to a gage which may be used in connection with a wood-molding or similar machine to properly adjust the knives thereof for cutting the wood to be molded, and has for its object the construction of a gage adapted to be easily adjusted to the knife-carrying cylinder of a woodmolding or similar machine in such a manner that the knife or knives to be used may be quickly but accurately adjusted on said cylinder to cut the wood to be molded at any depth and any part of the surface thereof desired by the operator.
My device consists of the plates A and B, of metal, wood, or other suitable material, plate A having stamped or printed on one side thereof in well known-manner a graduated scale Ct, beginning at the point a and ending at the edge a of said plate A and extending the width of said plate from edge a to a as shown in Fig. 2, said plate A also being provided with perforations a for the reception of screws, as more fully set forth hereinafter. Plate B has formed integral therewith a flange b, and has at one end thereof an arm 5 secured to said plate B in slot 6 by set-screw bias shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In said plate B are elongated slots 19 in which are adapted to fit set-screws b for the securing together and proper adjustment of plates A and B, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. As shown in the drawings, the plates A and B are secured together by means of set-screws b in such relation to each other that the edge a of plate A extends beyond the edge of plate B one-quarter of an inch, the flange b of plate B being of a depth equal to the thickness of plate A for purposes hereinafter described.
In operation when the knives are to be ad{ justed the operator first holds the edge a of plate A against the edge of the knife-carrying cylinder G of the molding-machine in such a position that the blade of the knife D will extend over the surface of the edge a of plate A until the cutting edge rests against the edge of plate B, said knife thus extending one-quarter of one inch from the edge of the knife carrying cylinder, which is the proper distance to enable most straightknives to cut at the highest cutting-point or just to surface-the board. (See Fig. 1.) To adjust the knife to cut the board at the desired depth, the operator then reverses the gage and holds the flanged edge b of plate B against the edge of the knife-carrying cylinder in such a po= sition that the arm I) is adjusted by means of set-screw b in slot 12* to bear against the inner end of said cylinder, so that the inner edge a of the graduated scale will be in alinement with the guide-line of the machine, against which the edge of the board moves. The knife thus extends over the edge of the flange Z), which, being of equal width to the thickness of plate A, allows the knife to ex tend over the graduated surface of plate A and be adjusted thereon by means of the locking-nut E on the knife-carrying cylinder at any point up to one and one-quarter inches which it is desired that the depth below the surface of the board is to be out, as shown in Fig. 2. The operator then adjusts the knife laterally on the cylinder to cut the board at the desired point on its surface in well-known manner.
When a knife or knives of greater thickness are used than that requiring a quarterof-an-inch projection to cut at the highest cutting-point, the plates A and B are adjusted upon each other by means of the slots 79 and set-screws b theoperation of adjusting to cut the desired depth and distance from the guide-line being the same as described above. The plates A and B being each of equal width, the distance from the edge a of plate A to the edge of plate B is equal to that from the flange b to the edge a of plate A when said plates are secured together. It will also be understood that the operator may first adjust the knife the proper distance from the guide-line instead of to out the desired depth, as above described, and that the gage may vary in details of construction without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having now described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A gage consisting of a plate A, having on the surface thereof a graduated scale; of a plate B, having formed integral therewith a flange b of a depth equal to the thickness of plate A; a laterally-adjustable arm secured to said plate B, and means for securing said plates A and B one upon the other in such relation to each other that the edge a of plate A, extends beyond the edge of plate 13, the proper distance for setting a knife at its highest cutting-point, and in such manner that the edge of such flange b, is on a level with the surface of said plate A, and of equal distance to the edge thereof, for the purpose of adjusting said knife on the surface of plate A, to cut at the required depth, substantially as described. 7
2. A gage consisting of the plates A, and B, of equal Width; of a graduated scale on the surface of said plate A; of a flange formed integral with said plate B, and of a depth equal to the thickness of said plate A; of a laterally-adj ustable arm secured to said plate B, and means for adjustably securing said plates A, and B, one upon the other, so that the edge of said flange b, is on a level with the surface of said plate A, substantially as described.
