XEMANTHUS S. ALLEN, OF GRANGER, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 64,468, dated Illay 7, 1867.
e'dge Iljthldt reform in in flgtse gfitttts emu :mt muting part mt flgc smut.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, X. S. ALLEN, of Granger, in the county of Medina, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Carriage-Shaft Coupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a, side View of the coupling.
Figure 2 is a top View.
Like letters refer to like parts in the different views.
A represents the links connecting the shafts or thills to the axle. B the clip which connects the coupling to the axle in the ordinary way. C is ahook oihhead provided with a slot, at. D is a pin which is attached at each end to the cheeks or jaws E. This coupling is designed to take the place of the ordinary nut and bolt, which are liable to be lost by the nut becoming loose and the bolt falling out, thus letting the shafts fall. The shafts being raised to a perpendicular position, the hook C is inserted between the jaws E and on the pin D, the back-piece F being concaved out to exactly conform to the hook, as seen at G, fig. 1. When in use the hooks are in the position shown in fig. 1, and can be removed by no backing or straining. In backing, the hook is pushed against the back-piece F, and in turning the strain is on the jaws or cheeks, thusrelieving the pins. It is'impossible to uncouple the shafts while in this position; thus there is no liability to accidents of that kind.
What I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The hook or head C, provided with a slot, 11, in combination with the pin D, cheeks or jaws E, and backpiece F, arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
X. S. ALLEN.
