MOTION-CONVERTING MECHANISM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 644,678, dated March 6, 1900.
Application filed September 1, 1899. Serial No. 729,181. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern;
Be it known that LIIARRY IV. MEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Motion-Converting Mechanism; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in washing-machines wherein a pin-wheel suspended in a clothes-receptacle is made to oscillate; and the object of my improvement is to afford means for transmitting an oscillating movement to a pin-wheel from a revolving wheel.
I accomplish my object by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan of the driving mechanism; and Fig. 2 is an elevation, partly in central section.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
The clothes-receptacle 1 is provided with a hinged lid 2, upon which the mechanism is mounted. The frame 3 is secured to the lid 2 by screws or otherwise. The shaft 4 extends through a suitable bearing in the frame 3 and depends through the lid 2 and into the receptacle 1. A pin-wheel 16 of the usual construction is mounted upon the lower end of said shaft in the customary manner. Upon the upper end of the shaft 4 is rigidly secured a pinion 5, which is engaged and driven,
by the toothed quadrant 6, which is mounted upon the stud 7. A bifurcated lug 8 is cast integral with the quadrant 6 and extends in the opposite direction therefrom. The vertically-movable connecting-bar 9 is secured in said bifurcated lug by means of the pin 15 and is adapted to oscillate said quadrant when the bar 9 is gyrated. The bar 9 extends through an opening in the revoluble disk 10, which disk is adapted to gyrate said bar. The driving-shaft 14 is mounted in the bearing 12, which is cast integral with the frame 3. The disk 10 is mounted upon the inner end of the shaft 14, and upon the outer end is mounted the driving-wheel 13.
In operation the clothes to be treated are placed in the receptacle with a quantity of suds, &c., and after closing the lid the driver wheel is revolved by any suitable source of power, thus revolving the disk 10, which drives the end of the bar 9 in a circle. The movement of said bar obviously oscillates the quadrant, and in turn the pinion and pin-wheel 16 are given a like motion. The said pin-wheel agitates the contents of the receptacle, thus cleansing the clothes.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a mechanical movement, the combination of a suitable frame, a horizontal revolving driving-shaft mounted in said frame, a disk upon the inner end of said shaft, an oscillating toothed quadrant having a rearwardly-extending bifurcated lug, and mounted upon a stud, and arranged in a horizontal plane at right angles to said disk; a vertical oscillating shaft mounted in said frame and having secured upon its upper end a pinion which is engaged-by said quadrant; a gyrating bar pivoted to said quadrant, ranging in said bifurcated lug, and having a connection with said disk by means of which said bar is actuated; and means for revolving said driving-shaft, substantially as shown and described.
