JOHN H. LUDWVlG,-OF NEl/V YORK, N. Y.
SCALE BRIDGE-BAR FOR PIANOFORTES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 644,616, dated March 6, 1900.
Applicatin filed August 6, 1898.
To all ZU7'b0777/ it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. LUDWIG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scale Bridge-Bars for Pianofortes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved scale bridge-bar for pianofortes which is simple in construction, strong, and durable, andincreases the volume of tone and renders the same pure and distinct and devoid of all disturbing sounds or noises.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the views, Figure l is a perspective view of a piece of my improved scale bridge-bar for pianofortes, partly in section. Fig. 2 is arear elevation of part of the scale bridge-bar. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the under side of part of the same. Fig. l is a vertical transverse sectional view of a modified construction of the same.
The scale bridge-bar A is provided with a downwardly-inclined lip or flange B, the lower edge of which bears down on the strings O. The bridge-bar A is provided at its under side with a series of legs or supports D, which rest on the metal frame E of the pianoforte and between which legs the strings a pass, as shown, and between the legs the screws F are passed through suitable holes in the bridgebar and are screwed into the metal frame E, the screws passing between the strings, as shown.
The legs D are provided with extensions H toward the rear, which extensions are provided in their upper edges with notches or recesses in which a metal rod J rests, over which the strings pass, exerting a downward pressure on said rod and on the extensions of the legs.
In place of providing a separate rod J be- Serial No. 687,899. (No model.)
hind and below the bridge-bar and on the extensions H said rod can be cast integral with the legs or their extensions, as shown at H in Fig. 4.
It will be observed that the strings exert a pressure on the rod J or H in the direction of the arrow mthat is, the direction in which the blow is delivered by the piano-hammerand that the strings exert a pressure on the edge of the lip or flange B in the reverse of the direction of the arrow 0sthat is, in the reverse of the direction in which the blow of the piano-hammer is delivered.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1.- A scale bridge-bar for pianofortes, having one edge lower than the other and legs, having extensions on the other edge, which extensions have recesses in their upper ends and a rod resting in said recesses, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a pianoforte the combination with a metalframe and strings, of a scale bridge-bar, independent of the metal frame, and having one edge lower than the other and also havin glegs, which rest upon the metal frame, and a support for the strings, along that side of the bar having the higher edge, the strings passing under the bar, and between the legs and bearing upward on the lower edge of the bar and downward on the support along the higher edge of the bar and means for. holding the bridge-bar on the metal frame substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 26th day of July, 1898.
JOHN H. LUDl/VIG.
Witnesses FREDERICK M. WILSON, OSCAR F. GUNZ.
