W I v fiwmw 62, 1 mnslemflldwsenz'u UNITED- STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TIIORSTEN M. WASSENIUS, OF WATERTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS.
DRESSING STAND AND MIRROR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 644,044, dated February 20, 1900.
Application filed August 17, 1898. Serial No. 688,756- (No model.)
- State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Dressing Stands and Mirrors, of which the following description, in connection with the acc'ompanyin g drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object the production of a novel and simple stand and mirror for use of ladies when dressing the hair.
In this invention the mirror is supported on a vertically-adjustable self-holding staff, so that it may be adjusted vertically into any desired position and be there held automatically, and the mirror is so supported that it may be tipped to any required angle and be there retained.
The particular features in which the invention herein contained consists will be hereinafter defined and specified in the claim.
Figure l in elevation shows my improved stand and mirror with the column partly broken out. Fig. 2 is a partial side elevation of the upper end of the stand, staff, and mirror. Fig. 3 shows the connection attached to the mirror, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged section showing part of the column and the lower end of the staff.
The column A,preferably of wood and bored centrally at A from end to end, is sustained on a suitable base or foot A and at its upper end the column is provided with a stand A upon which may be laid combs, brushes, and other toilet articles. The bore of the column receives a staff B, made of wood split or provided with a saw-kerf,as B, at its lower end, the said staff being shown as bored to intersect said kerf, and thus make an opening for the reception of an expander 13*", made, preferably, as a block of wood, which may be driven into the hole so made to expand the kerf more or less, leaving the free ends of the stafi at opposite sides of the kerf separated, to thus form a compressible spring, so that the lower end of the staff will hold frictionally upon the interior of the bore of the column and maintain the staff in any position inwhich it may be left by the user of the stand and mirror. The staff has inserted of the staff throughout, above the bolt C, fits substantially the interior of the bore A, so that the said staff is held firmly and without any tendency of wabbling. The upper end of the staff is slabbed off, as at b, at opposite sides, and each slabbed portion receives against it ears 2 of a plate 6, attached by screws through the holes 6 to the back 6 of the mirror-frame 6 it containing a suitable mirror 6 The ears e have openings 0 and a bolt f isinserted through the opening of one of said ears and through the reduced upper end of the staff, and then through the other ear, and has applied to it a clamping-nut f, so that said nut may be turned to cause the ears to hug between them the upper end of the stafi firmly, so that the mirror will be retained in any position or angle in which it may be placed by the user of the mirror, and so, also, the staff B may be revolved as desired in the column.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A dressing-stand comprising a centrallybored column provided with a foot or base, a staff slidably fitted in said column, and having a saw-kerf at its lower extremity, and also having a bore intersecting said saw-kerf at a point above the lower extremity, an expanding device adapted to be disposed in said bore, thereby to expand the lower end of the TI-IORSTEN M. WASSENIUS.
