UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT HUGH STEVENSON, OF MANCHESTER, AND NATHANIEL BOTT OHADWICK, OF STOCKPORT, ENGLAND.
BOX-COVERING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,804, dated February 20, 1900.
Application filed May 13, 1898. Serial No. swear. on) model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ALBERT HUGH STE- vENsoN, residing at Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, and NATHANIEL Borr CHAD- WICK, residing at Stockport, in the county of Chester, England, subjects of the Queen of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Covering Machines, (for which we have made application for Letters Patent in Great Britain, No. 5,424, bearing date March 5, 1898,) of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in what are known in the trade as box-covering machines for applying atone operation a covering-strip or two or two or more covering-strips of paper, cloth, or other material to a paper or other box or lid. In such machines the box or lid to be covered is placed on a suitably-shaped form secured adjustably on a shaft driven by the machine. This form prior to our present invention has been secured in position by passing the threaded end of the shaft through a hole formed for its reception in the bottom of the hollow rectangular form and then applying a nut to the screwed end of the shaft. In this arrangement the screw is very apt to Work loose, and it is difficult, especially when the boxes tobe covered are all of small size, to get the hand, which is the left hand, inside the hollow form in order to tighten or slacken the nut and also to adjust and set the form in order that the trimming and covering strips may be cut off at the proper point.
The object of our improvements is to overcome this defect, and we accomplish this object in the manner and by the means hereinafter described, with reference to the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of part of a boxcovering machine to which our improvements are applied. Figs. 2 and 3 are details of parts of the same. Fig. i represents a section taken longitudinally of the hollow shaft.
In the views, a designates the frame or table of the machine, 1) the shaft from which the box-form c is rotated, and d the treadle for starting and stopping the same.
According to our improvements we make the shaft e, on which the box-form c is secured, hollow, and on it at one end we form or fix a flanged boss 6, and we secure the box-form c in position by passing through the hole in it and through the hollow shaft e a bolt f, upon the threaded end of which, projecting beyond the opposite end of the hollow shaft e, we screw a milled nut g or a thumbscrew or other suitable device, which is put on and taken off, as required, by the right hand of the operator. By this arrangement we can readily put on or take off the boxform and as readily adjust it in position without having to place the hand inside of it and without any risk of spoiling a box through wrong adjustment of the form or through the form getting displaced on account of the nut working loose.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of our said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed,
we declare that what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,
In combination in a box-covering machine, the frame having bearings, a hollow shaft journaled in said bearings and having an extension provided with a bearing end or head against which the bottom of the box may rest, said bearing end being arranged in position to hold the box in proper relation to the working parts of the machine, means for turning the hollow shaft, a bolt passing through the hollow shaft having a head thereon to clamp the bottom of the box between it and the bearing on the end of the hollow shaft, the opposite end of the bolt being screw-threaded and projecting from the hollow shaft and the nut for drawing the bolt to clamp the box, substantially as described;
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT HUGH STEVENSON. NATHANIEL BOTT OHADWIOK.
