SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,268, dated February 13, 1900.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J O N HALLNER, residing at Mead, in the county of Saunders and State of Nebraska, have invented certain useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full,clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

This invention has relation to a new and novel improvement in wrenches.

The object of my invention is to provide a wrench which may be used as a monkeywrench, a pipe-wrench, a hand-vise, and a screw-driver.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows aside elevation of my improved wrench with portions removed. Fig. 2 shows an end view of the shifting jaw. Fig. 3 shows aside View of the tension-spring used in my invention, while Fig. 4 shows a side view of the shifting jaw.

My invention embodies, essentially, a head 2, which head is provided with the jaws 0,, projecting to one side, and a similar jaw 5, projecting in an opposite direction, and from this head extends a stem 3, so that this head 2 and stem 3 approximately form the letter T. At the lower end this stem 3 is provided with a screw-driver 0, while the lower portion is provided with a suitable screw-thread b, as is shown. Threading upon this stem 3 is a handle C, which handle is hollow and is provided near the upper end with the thread portion 6, engaging the screw-thread b, so that this hollow handle may be worked up and down upon the stem 3. Below, this handle is provided with one or more openings 4, so that a capstan-pin may be inserted into said openings to actuate the handle when said wrench is used as ahand-vise. Extending upward from the handle 0 proper is neck 8, and from this neck 8 extends a collar 7, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1.

Adapted to loosely slide upon the stem 3 is a moving jaw B, provided with the projections 1, to which is secured the collar 10, as is clearly shown in Fig. 4. Extending from this collar 10 and the portions 1 1 are the ears (1 d, as is shownin Fig. 4, between which ears d and collar 10 is a removed portion 9, so that the collar 7 of the handle C may snugly work within the seating 9, while the ears at work into the collar 8 of the handle proper, as is shown in Fig. 1, so that after the handle Ois inserted into the handle B it is revolubly held therein.

Now to assemble my improved wrench it is simply necessary to place the jaw B upon the threaded stem 3 and insert the handle 0 into the jaw until said handle works over the screw-driver point a, when the handle 0 is revolved to thread the same upon the stem. From this it will be seen that my invention embodies a wrench the moving jaw of which is carried backward and forward by means of the operating-handle, which operating-handle threads direct upon the main portion of the threadedstem of the moving jaw.

In order to hold the handle in spring tension within the moving jaw, I provide athin bow-spring S, which has curved ends, which curved ends will be about the portion below the ears d, so that this spring S is interposed between the collar 8 and the sides 1 1 of the moving jaw. In Fig 1 I have partly broken away this spring S to show the collar 8 of the handle, the spring in this View being shown in position. This spring prevents the handle being turned, as the spring is given such a length that it tightly binds upon the collar 8 of the handle 0. The handle can only be operated in turning the same against the friction of the spring S.

WVhen the handle 0 is fed upward its full length to bring the two jaws CL and B into juxtaposition, the screw-driver point a projects beyond the handle 0, so that a convenient screw-driver is provided.

'The rear jaws 5 5 can be given a suitable incision, so that round or other regular or irregular shaped objects can be nicely engaged.

Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is-

In a wrench the combination of the following instrumentalities, to wit: an approximately T-shapedmember, the stem of which is threaded approximately half its length, the remaining portion being square, the head of said stern projecting farther outward upon one side to form a clamping-jaw, a hollow open-ended handle threading upon said stem, said handle being provided with capstan-pi11 openings and a grooved neck, a sliding jaw Working upon the square portion of said T- shaped member, said jaw being provided With projecting ears, said ears being adapted to work into the grooved collar of said handle so that said ears are locked Within said collar 10 while said handle is upon said T-shaped member, and a spring held by said sliding jaw to bind upon said handle, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
