SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,242, dated February 13, 1900..
Application filed January 24, 1899.
To an whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN S. E. SPOERL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons; and I do declare the following to bee. full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 4
The invention has relation to improvements in buttons especially designed for upholsterers in tufting. 1
The object of the invention is to provide a button of this character which shall be simple in construction, durable in use, and neat in appearance and which may be easily and quickly applied.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved button. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the application of the button.
In the drawings, 1 denotes the head of the button, and 2 the shank. The head is preferably formed of the shell 64 and back I), the portion CL being covered with a piece of fabric 0, which is clenched in place by the inwardlyturned flange d of the shell. This flange d not only holds the fabric in position, but also holds the flanged back I) of the head. The shank 2 is composed of the legs 6 and f, beveled at their lower ends on their adjacent faces, as shown at g. The upper ends of the legs are connected by a cross-piece h, which is preferably integral with said legs and lies in a groove 6, formed in the shell or of the head, while the legs project through diametrically opposite holes j. The shell is packed with any suitable filling e, as shown, and this also assists in retaining the prong or shank in position.

By bending the edge 01 of the shell a of the head inward I secure four rcsults-to wit, the secure attachment of the fabric with the head, the securement of the back I) of the head, the retention of the filling, and the lockin g of the shank in the groove t of the shell a, thereby preventing the canting or \vabbling of the shank when the button is in the act of being applied. 5 5
By beveling the inner faces of the lower ends of the shank, as shown, it will be seen that when the button is forced into position,
as illustrated in Fig. 3, the legs of the shank will be separated, and thus lock the button in I place.
The beveled inner faces of the lower ends of the shank in passing through a stuffed fabric will tend to deflect the legs outwardly, and thus separate them, and after the button-head has been seated the beveled ends of the shank may be turned upward and outward by hand, as shown in Fig. 3.

An improved tufting button for upholstery, comprising the flanged shell a formed with a struckup transverse groove 1', the flanged back 1) formed with the orifices j j 00- incident with the opposite ends of the groove in said shell, the filling e packed between said. shell and back, the inverted-U-shaped shank 2 having its cross-piece seated in the groove in the shell, and its parallel legs extending through said orifices in the back, and an encompassing fabric inclosing said shell and having its free edge secured between the flanges of said-shell and back, substantially as shown and described.
