Description

JA. FLETCHER.
STUMP VFULLER.
(Application led Sept, 20, 1899.)
(No Model.)
THE Nonms PETER: co.. PKoTcvLiwa. wAsNmovoN. o. c.
i TArEs PATENT OFFICE.
JOSHUA FLETCHER, OF VANCOUVER, CANADA.
sTuMP-PULLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,187, dated February 13, 1900. Application filed September 20, 1899*. Serial No. 731,040. (No model.)
To cir/ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSHUA FLETCHER, a subject of Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Vancouver, county of New Westminster, Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stump-Pullers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to"stumppullers;h
and its object is to provide a light but powerful device for this purpose.
A further object is to provide a stumppuller which is simple in construction, powerful and effective in operation, and which can be manufactured at a moderate cost.
To these ends the invention consist-s in a stump-puller constructed substantially as hereinafter illustrated and described, and defined in the appended claim.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a stumppulling apparatus constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a detail.
In stump-pullers of the ordinary construction where a winding-drum is employed the strain is so excessive that the frame must be made very heavy and firmly staked to the ground, rendering the Work of clearing the ground slow and laborious and the apparatus expensive. To overcome these objections, the invention hereinafter described contemplates the employment of a comparatively light frame, because of the balancing of the strains of power and resistance.
In the d rawings,A represents a frame, which is preferably constructed of Wood and suitably braced, in which is rotatably mounted a drum A. The shaft of the drum projects above the frame, and secured thereto is a suitable beam A2, to the end of which is attached a suitable singletree A3, whereby the drum is adapted to be rotated. A suitable rope or cable a is wrapped about the center of the drum A and passed through a pulleyT j C to a fixed support by means of a suitable chain and connected at its outer end to a suitable iixedsupport C.
A coupler B, preferably triangular in form, is adapted to be suitably secured by means of a chain to the stump to be pulled, the connecting-chain passing through the apex of the triangle. At each of the remaining angles of the triangle is secured a rope or cable a', leading to the drum, about which it is oppositely wound with respect to the cable a. It will be seen upon inspection of Fig. 1 that by reason of the triangular shape of the coupler B the ropes a', being attached to each end of the base thereof, are spread or separated, so that a strand of the cable a is wrapped about the upper and the lower portions of the drum, thus preventing any liability of the strands of the cables being Wrapped upon each other and thus mutilated.
By the construction above described it will be seen that one rope is centrally wrapped about the drum, while the pulley rope is wound about the upper and lower portions thereof. Thus the two strains are balanced and the use of a very light frame rendered possible.
It is evident that the invention herein disclosed may be employed generally for moving heavy objects, and it is not therefore intended to limit the apparatus to the work shown.
NVhile I have herein shown a preferred form of carrying my invention into effect, yet Ido not desire to limit myself to such preferred details of construction, but claim the right to use any and all modifications thereof which will serve to carry into effect the objects to be attained by this invention in so far as such modifications and changes may fall within the spirit and scope of my said invention.
I claim- A stump puller,- comprising a suitable frame; a winding-drum mounted therein; a cable centrally wrapped about said drumand secured at its outer end to a suitable fixed support; means for rotating said drum; a triangular coupler adapted to be secured to the stump to be pulled; and a cable attached to each of the angles at the baseof said coupler and wound respectively about the upper and lower ends of said drum, substantially as described.
In witness whereof l have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two Witnesses.
JOSHUA FLETCHER.
