SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,972, dated February 6, 1900.

Be it known that I, CHARLES FROLICH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, (Brooklym) in the county of Kings and State of NewYork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Arch Center Braces, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to arch center braces for use in building construction; and the object thereof is to provide a device of this class which is adjustable for use in constructing arches of varying span.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which like iigures denote like parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my device in operative position; Fig. 2, an end View of two of said devices in operative position; Fig. 3, a top view of an altered form thereof in operative position, and Fig. 4 is a side view of a detail of Fig. 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, my arch center brace is composed of two members 5 and 5, which are preferably composed of planking and are placed side by side. One of said members 5 is slotted longitudinally, as at 6, and the other member is provided with adjusting-bolts '7, which operate in the slot 6 and are provided with the usual nuts and-washers 8. Each of the members 5 and 5a is grooved or recessed at the end, as at 9, to iit the flange 10 of girders 1l, used in building construction, and when the members 5 and 5a are suitably relatively adjusted the brace may be supported between two of said girders, as shown in the drawings. Each of the members 5 and 5 is provided with an arm 12, ad j ustably secured to the end portion thereof by means of an adjusting-bolt 13, which operates through a longitudinal slot 14. in said arm. Each arm l2 is provided with a yoked outer end portion l5, and a cross-beam 16 (shown in dotted lines) may be supported by the yokes of said arms at any predetermined height. upon the members 5 and 5a that the yokes shall support the cross-beam 16 parallel to the line of extension of the members 5 and 5a.
If two or more of the devices constructed as described .be supported parallel between two girders and the cross-beam 16 be supported by the arms 12 of each, the planks 17 (shown in dotted lines) may be supported thereby between the girders 11 and the arch built up thereon. When the arch has been constructed and allowed to set and harden, the center brace, cross-beams, and planks may be removed and reused in constructing arches in other portions of the building and in connection with girders at any distance apart. The concrete or other arch material is also filled in between the adjacent sides of the I beams or girders 1l and between the flanges 10 thereof.
In Figs. 3 and 4. I have shown an altered form of arch center-brace, in which the construction is the same as in Figs. 1 and 2, in combination with a supplemental brace member 18, which is designed to be used in connection with one of the members 5 and 5a in building arches in a corner portion of the girder structure or any portion thereof where, due to the presence of a pillar or other obstacle, the unaugmented center brace cannot be used.
Supposing a pillar should be located as at 19 in Fig. 3 and it were desired to arch over the space adjacent thereto, the supplemental member 18 would be suspended from the member 5a, and the flange 10 of the girder 11:L extending at right angles to the girders 10. The supplemental member 18 is provided with a shoulder 20 for engagement of the upper portion of the member 5 and a recess 21 for engagement of the ange 10a and also with a recess 22, in which a cross-beam similar to the cross-beam 16 may be supported. If two of such supplemental members 18 be similarly and parallelly mounted, a cross-beam may span the space between them and suitable planking be supported thereby in connection with the cross-beam supported by the adjacent arms 12 12 of the members 5 and 5. The supplemental member 18 is provided upon each face with a iixed piece 23, which roo operates to hold firmly a' plank, which may rest upon the piece 18 and take the piace of the cross-piece which is used in the recess 22.
