ATTACHMENT FOE ARTIFICIAL TEETH.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

I Be it known that L JOHNQ K. CROOKS, of Birmingham, in thecounty of Oakland, and Statc of Michigan, have invented-a new and useful Improvement in Attnclnneut'for Artificial Teeth; .and I do hereby dcclolre that the following isn full, clean, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art-to make and use the same, reference being had to the neeon pnuyiug drawings, forming part of this specification, in t which Figures 1, 2, -5 are views at my improved teeth uttuclnnent showing different forms of the eye or loop for securing: it to the rubber base.

This invention relates to van improvement in "the construction and arrangementof-nn attachment for artificial tceth,-wl iereby they are secured to the rubber base in general use; and consists in an eye attachment having flat doubleshnnks inserted in the tooth, instead of the old met-had witlrstraight and headed pins. My

improved eye and double-shank attachment is made, as usual, of plutina wire, and is designed to be set in the porcelain or other artificial teeth, by the manufacturers thereof,- ready for the use of the operating dentist foreonnectingwith the rubber base.

In the drawing; a is the eye, and b the shank of my improved attachment. It is formed by bending a piece of platinn wire, usually employed for this purpose, intothe'shnpc of i a loop oreye, in such manner that the two ends of the wire shall lie side by side in a line-at right anglesto the planeof the eye. The neck or shank 6 thus formed is thercforcdonble, and the two ends of the shank are flattened in line with calch other,

from the shoulder, at their junction with theeye, to their extremities, in'u greater degree at the latter than the former, so that the extremities tire thereby expanded or widened to form the double shank slightly wedge-shaped or dove-tailed, shown clearly in fig. 4. The double shank b is inserted in th'e tooth A, with thc'two ends in the longitudinal line of the tooth, as shown clearly in figs. 5, 6, and 7, having the same relative position as the pins in the old "plate tooth used on metallic plates with metallic backing, which seldom or never broke alt the point of insertion of the pins, wherein the arrangement difi'ers entirely from the present ordinary plan of attachment, with two straightpins placed in a line transversely to the tooth, and having heads or hooks (bentby the dentist) for securing them to the rubber base, which arrangement weakens the tooth and mukes it subject to fracture at that point. By this arrangement of-the double shank b. in the tooth it will be seen that the eye a will be so placed relatively to the tooth as to lie in the same plane with the rubber base, nt'rightangles to a vertical line through the tooth, and thus be firmly nnchorerl or held in place, makings. much stronger connection of the tooth to the base then is possible with hooked or headed pins. It will be observed also that greatly increased strength in the attachment is secured by the dove-tail form ot' the double shank 6 in the tooth A, while the vertical position of the two ends, aswell as their flat form, securesthe tooth itself from diminution of body and strength laterally or in its transverse section.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--' The loop or eye a, provided with the double shank b, the two ends of which are flattened in line with each other in sueh z manner thatt-heir outer extremities shell be-widened to a greater degree than their points of connection with the eye, thereby being slightly wedge-shaped, said shank being inserted in the tooth A with the said flattened ends in the longitudinal line of the tooth, while the eye itselfis atright angles to said line, substantinlly as herein shown and described. I
