NITED STATES PATENT FFICE. 5
RALPH H. BARNARD, OF NORTHBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO WALTER M. FARWELL, OF SAME PLACE.
DIE FOR MANUFACTURING COMBS OR HAlR-PINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 642,666, dated February 6, 1900.
Application filed August 31,1899- Serial No. 729,019. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RALPH H. BARNARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Northborough, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Dies for the Manufacture of Combs or Hair-Pins; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to improvements in dies for stamping or cutting out hairpins from sheet material; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts of which it is composed, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which Figure 1 represents a bottom view of my device. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view. Fig. 4: is a bottom view in modified form having the followers removed.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the die, comprising a solid base a, which is vertically perforated to receive the fastening-bolts Z), by which the die is secured to a plunger or a lever of a machine in operating the die.
Permanently secured to the under side of the plate a is arranged a nest of knives c, d, and e, having their cutting edges flush with one another and are separated by spaces f, g, and h, in which are arranged follower-plates 1', that are provided with vertical stems or rods j, that pass through perforations 7c in the body of the die and are secured at their upper ends to a plate Z, arranged between the four holdwhen the combs and central piece areejected from the spaces and die, and the die is again ready for another stroke.
It will be observed from the above description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, that I dispense with springs for forcing the cut combs out of the die and arrange a nest of knives upon the single bedplate, and between said knives, within the spaces, are the follower-plates that force the combs from the die at every stroke. I have shown the cutters in curved form; but it is obvious that any desired shape of knives can be used, the result of the cutting being the same.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings I have shown the blades reversely arranged, and in constructing the die the spaces can be widened, ta pered, or made narrow, as taste may dictate, and a device as herein described is simple in operation, durable, and at the same time cheap to manufacture.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with the plate, base, stems and plungers, of the cutters, formed integral with the base-plate and arranged reversely to one another whereby duplicate combs are cut at a single stroke, all as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RALPH H. BARNARD.
