FIREPROOF FLOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,614, dated February 6, 1900.
Application filed June 9, 1899. Serial No. 719,914. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, GOTTFRIED KNOCHE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, in the borough of Manhattan and State of New York, have invented certain new aud useful Improvements in Fireproof Floors, of which the following is a speciicatiou.
vMy invention relates to an improved fireproof floor which is constructed of a suitable cement body in which transverse cavities of considerable size are formed, so that the weight of the fireproof floor is greatly decreased, while the fire-resisting qualities of the same are not in the least diminished; and the invention consists of a fireproof oor composed of suitable abutments mounted on the beams, a ceiling-layer connecting the bases of the beams and abutments,transverse connecting portions between the abutments, a sounddeadening layer of suitable material extending over the ceiling-layer between the abutments, ribs or bricks extending transversely of and supported on side shoulders of the transverse connecting portions, and a covering of cement extending over the beams, abutments, ribs, and transverse connecting portions, as will be fully described hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical transverse section of my improved cement floor as arranged between two beams of a building. Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. l with the covering-layer and some ribs removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on line 3 3, Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the form which is used.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a ceiling of' cement made of suitable thickness and held by the usual anchors, which are secured to the beams, said ceiling extending below the bases of the beams. At both sides of the beams are formed vcement abutments B of suitable thickness, which extend down to the ceiling A. Wooden forms or moldboxes W, having slightly-tapering sides and ends, are then supported on the abutments transversely to the beams, said boxes being provided with projecting cleats lV at the upper edges of the sides, as shown in Fig. 4, and
the space between the boxes connecting the abutments B is filled up with cement, so as to form transverse connecting portions C, which are provided at their upper edges, corresponding to the cleats W', with shouldersl C and with inclined sides corresponding to the sides of the mold-boxes. The transverse connecting portions C may be reinforced by means of hat or corrugated metal plates O2, so as to impart additional strength to them. The Wooden boxes are then removed, and the lowerpart of the cavity formed by the same is filled up with a layer E of sand, ashes, or other sound-deadening material to a height of two or three inches, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. A number of brick ribs D or the like are then placed at intervals apart on the shoulders C across the opening formed between the transverse connecting portions C, after which a layer F of cement is placed over the top of the beams and the ribs, so as to ill the interstices between them.
By the construction described a number of transverse cavities are formed between the abutments B and the transverse connecting portio'ns C, by which the Weight of the reproof iioor is greatly reduced, while the complete embedding of the beams in the cement is obtained, so that not only a strong iioor, but also a fireproof and sound-deadening floor for fireproof buildings, -is obtained.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a fireproof ioor, the combination, wi th the beams, of abut-ments at both sides of the beams, a ceiling-layer extending below the beams and abutments, a layer of sand or other deadening material extending over the ceiling-layer between the abutments, transverse connecting portions connecting the abutments, spaced at suitable distances from each other, ribs extending transversely between said connecting portions, and a top layer of cement extending over the beams, abutments and ribs, substantially as set forth.
