HOWARD TRIMBLE, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
Lenen-LEAF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,508, dated January 30, 1900.
Appiimionnearovemter11,1899. sentire. 736,635. (Nomen-,11)
T0 a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD TRIMBLE, a' citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Led ger-.Leaves and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention ,such as WillV enable others skilled in the art to Which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in ledger-leaves g and it is embodied in the particular form and arrangement of leaf hereinafter described, and defined in the claims.
In mercantile business it frequently occurs that regular customers using certain brands or kinds of goods order the same by messenger or in Writing, and unless it is clearly stated what particular brand, kind, or style of article or material is mentioned recourse must be had to the books of the concern Ato ascertain just what the particular customer has been in the habit of purchasing. It is found very inconvenient to go over the charged accounts of customers for the above-stated purpose, and my invention is designed and intended to overcome the objection and largely avoid the inconveniences incidental to the old method.
Vith the above object in view the invention, generally speaking, consists in a ledgersheet having printed, marked, arranged, or stamped thereon in a convenient locality al schedule or list or group of general standard items With spaces for Writing in fully the speciic designations.
In the drawing is shown what is known as a loose-leaf ledger-sheet; but in this connection it is to be understood that the inven- 'although the special ruling is Wholly arbitrary. The sheet is conveniently divided into two portions-namely, the body or ruled portions and a heading portion B. On the heading portion are printed or otherwise placed separated columns of names C C C2, each column differing from therother. For convenience of explanation the sheet shown is onev arranged for use in the retail grocery business, and the items enumerated or printed in the columns are groceries. Between the varions columns is a space in which the description or designation of the specific kind of material can be inserted-as, for instance, after the Word Coffee the word Mocha may be placed. After the respective names in the columns C, C', and C2 are lines which extend into the blank spaces at the right of the columns, so that au inserted designation Will be placed separate from the others and in proper alinement With its general Word.
While three columns are shown, it is to be understood that any desired number can be employed, the same depending on the busi-l ness for which the leaves are intended.
Conveniently near the center of the space B is a suitable blank D, containing spaces for thel number of sheet, the name of the cussary entries. Such, however, may be omitted when the sheets are to be bound or used as bound ledger-sheets.
In use when a customer is. in the habit of purchasing a particular brand of material,
the specific name is entered in the blank space opposite the design atingwordas, for instance, Lily, Mocha, Japam &c.- after the respective words Flour, Coffee, Tea, dac.' This arrangement enables the merchant to tell at once what his customer has been in the habit of purchasing, it being only necessary to refer to the designating-columns at the head of the page.
It is to be understood that all the pages of the ledger Will be printed with designating- Words..
An additionaladvantage in the use of the invention is When a customer calls and asks for goods like he has purchased before, not remembering the name or quality, in which case the head of his account need only be referred to to secure the necessary information.
I do not limit myself to the particular arrangement shown and described, but believe that I am the iirst to ever provide a ledger or bookkeeping sheet with provisions for designating the particular goods usually purchased by a customer other than the regular itemized account or entry.
temer, street, number, and any other neces- IOO Having thus described my invention, What of naines of articles or material, and spaces I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letadjacent said names in which specic desigters Patent, is nations can be placed, substantially as de- 1.
