DUPLEX PUMPING APPARATUS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. HIETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Duplex Pumping Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in duplex fluid-pressure pumps for anhydrousammonia-pumping apparatus, and the present application is a division of my application for Letters Patent, Serial No. 640,496, filed June 12, 1897.
The invention has for its object to provide improved mechanism for actuating the ammonia-p11 mps, simple and effective valve-gear for the pumping-engine, and a strong and durable framing for the various operative parts of the apparatus.
To these ends the invention consists in the features and in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described, and specifically set forth in the claims following the description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a duplex pumping apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view of the apparatus.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like referencernumerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the bed-plate of the apparatus, adapted to be suitably anohored toa foundation of any preferred kind.
.To the opposite ends of the bed-plate are bolted semicylindrical pillars 2, in which are disposed the ammonia-pump cylinders 3. The pump-cylinders 3 are provided on their sides with flanges 4, which are bolted to the tops of the pillars 2, and from the upper ends of each of the pillars project frames, consisting of a partially-circular or segment-shaped central upright 5 and two outer or side uprights 6. The said frames are securely tied and braced together by four-armed braces 7, and at their top are provided with flanges 8, tied together by a stay-beam 9, formed of angleplates, as shown.
On the flanges S are supported and bolted vertical steam-power cylinders 10, provided with pistons adapted to reciprocate simultaneously in opposite directions, as will more fully hereinafter appear. The steam-pistons are provided with depending piston-rods 11, while the pistons in the am monia-pump cylinders 3 are provided with upwardly-projecting piston -rods 12, which are in alinement with the piston-rods 11. The adjacent ends of the pistonrods 11 and 12 are keyed in cross-heads 13, to the opposite sides of which are attached jaws 14, that engage and travel on cross-head straps 15, rigidly bolted to the uprights 5. The jaws 14 form a movable con nection between the cross-heads and straps and maintain the piston-rods 11 and 12 in perfect alinement and cause the same and the cross-heads to travel in true rectilinear paths. Journaled in bearings in the four armed braces 7 is a shaft 15*, on which is a walkin beam consisting of two parallel cross-beams 16, connected at their opposite ends to the cross-heads 13 by links 17. The cross-beams 16 are connected together by a wrist-pin 18, which passes through both beams at a suitable point at one side of the pivotal center of said beams.
On the wrist-pin 18 is journaled the upper end of a connecting-rod 19, the lower end of which is journaled on a crank-shaft 20, rotating in suitable bearings formed on the bed of the machine. On one of the ends of the shaft 20 is fixedly mounted a fly-Wheel 21, and also fixed on said shaft is an eccentric 22. An eccentric-rod 23 is connected at one end to the eccentric by the usual strap connection, and at its other end is pivotally connected to an oscillating link 24, which in turn is pivotally connected to the four-armed braces 7. To the free end of the link 24 is pivotally attached one end of a connectingrod 25, the other end of which is connected by a universal joint 26 to a transverse rockshaft 27, journaled in bearings 011 the staybeam To the opposite ends of the rockshaft are fixed crank-arms 28, which project in opposite directions and which are respectively connected to the valve-stems 29, which actuate the valves of the two steam-cylinders.
Through the medium of the valve-gear just described the pistons of the steam-cylinders will be caused to reciprocate simultaneously in opposite directions in a manner that will be obvious, the universal-joint connection between the connecting-rod and rock-shaft permitting the movements of the connectingrod and rock-shaft arm in the arcs of two different circles or in the arcs of two circles in planes at right angles with each other. At the same time the pistons 12 of the am moniapump cylinders 3 will also be caused to reciprocate simultaneously in opposite directions in the manner clearly set forth in my former application hereinbefore referred to, to which reference is to be had for explanation of the construction and mode of operation of said cylinders and the piston-heads therein.
It will be understood that changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be made within the scope ofthe invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a duplex pumping apparatus, the combination with a bed-plate and a frame rising therefrom, of two pump-cylinders supported by the bed-plate, two power-cylinders supported by the frame and arranged vertically above said pump-cylinders, the piston-rods of said pump and power cylinders being connected at their adjacent ends to cross-heads, a wa1king-beam journaled intermediate its ends in said frames, links connecting the opposite ends of said walking-beam to the respective cross-heads, a crank-shaft, a connesting-rod attached to one end of the walking-beam and to the crank-shaft, a rocking arm actuated from the crank-shaft and pivoted to the frame, a horizontal rock-shaft arranged below the power-cylinders and carrying two oppositely-extending crank-arms attached to the valve-stems thereof, and a connecting-rod attached at one end to the rockshaft by a universal joint and at its other end directly to said rocking arm, substantially as described.
2. In a duplex pumping apparatus, the combination, with a suitable frame, of two pumpcylinders, two power-cylinders arranged vertically above said pump-cylinders, the pistonrods of said pump and power cylinders being respectively connected at their adjacent ends to cross-heads, a walking-beam journaled inend connected by a universal joint to said rock-shaft, substantially as described.
3. In a duplex pumping apparatus, the combination with a bed-plate, of semicircular pillars 2 rising therefrom, pump-cylinders 3 arranged within said pillars and provided with peripheral flanges 4 bolted to the tops thereof, upright frames supported on said pillars and provided at their up per ends with flanges S, a stay-beam 9 attached to said flanges, fourarmed braces 7 attached to said upright frames and pillars respectively, and powercylinders resting on and secured to the said flanges, substantially as described.
41. In a duplex pumping apparatus, the combination with a bed-plate, of semicircular pillars 2 rising therefrom, upright frames sup ported on said pillars and provided at their upper ends with flanges 8, a stay-beam 9 attached to said flanges, four-armed braces 7 attached to said upright frames and pillars respectively, pump-cylinders arranged within said pillars and secured thereto, power-cylinders supported on said flanges, the pistonrods of said power and pump cylinders being respectively connected at their adjacent ends to cross-heads traversing guides on said upright frames, a walking-beam mounted on a shaft having bearing in the fourarmed braces, and links connecting the ends of the walking-beam to the respective cross-heads, substantially as described.
5. In a duplex pumping apparatus, the combination of a frame, a pair of pump-cylinders, one arranged at each end of the frame, a pair of power-cylinders, one arranged vertically above each pump-cylinder, the piston-rods of said pump and power cylinders being respectively connected at their adjacent ends to cross-heads, a walking-beam journaled in the frame and having its opposite ends connected to said cross-heads to operate the piston-rods of the pump and power cylinders at one end of the frame in unison and the respective pairs of cylinders at opposite ends thereof alternately, a crankshaft, a connecting-rod attached to one end of the walking-beam and to the crank-shaft, an eccentric arranged on the crank-shaft, an eccentric-rod actuated thereby and connected to an oscillating arm, In testimony whereof I aflix my signature a rock-shaft connected to the valve-stems of in presence of two witnesses.
