OYDNOR B. CAMPBELL, OF GLOUSTER, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES M. CLARK, OF SAME PLACE.
SEALING SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,426, dated January 30, 1900. Application filed September 25,1899- Serial No. 731,645. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CYDNOR B. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glouster, in the county of Athens and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sealing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sealing tools or devices, and is principally designed for sealing packages, letters, and fruit-jars, although it may be used with advantage for many other purposes.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of such tool or device which shall possess superior advantages with respect to efficiency and use.
The invention consists in the novel con: struction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sealing tool or device constructed in accordance with myinvention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3is a cross-section on the line a; 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a cross-section on line y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank for forming the bottom and sides of the implement. Fig. 6 is a plan View of the blank from which the top of the tool is made.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates the body of the tool or device comprising the bottom 2 and sides 3, made of a single piece of sheet metal. The numeral A designates the top, also made of a single piece of metal, the ends of which are bent at right angles and form the ends of the tool or device. The sides 3 extend up above said top and are inclined inwardly and form a guideway to receive a stick of sealing-wax 5. The rear end of the tool is formed with a screw: threaded boss 7, with which is adapted to engage a removable stopper 8, one or both ends of which may be provided with a seal. The said end is soldered to the bottom and sides of the body of the tool and the said top is soldered to the sides 3. The front end of the tool has its lower edge bent inwardly at a right angle, forming a lug 9,.which is soldered to the bottom 2 and to the sides 3. Formed integral with said sides 3 are two tongues 10, which are curved inwardly and the ends soldered together, forming a spout or trough for conveying the melted wax to the object or article to be sealed. The said body and top form a receptaclefor containing a burning fluid of any suitable character, alcohol being preferred, and at the front end of the tool at each side thereof are tWo burner-tubes 12, which communicate with the said receptacle. These tubes project slightly beyond the said spout and are provided with wicks 13.
The manner of using the device is as fol= lows: The receptacle is filled with any suitable burning fluid and a stick of sealing-wax placed in the guideway with one end resting just above the spout. burner-tubes are then lighted and the heat thereof will melt the wax, which will flow down the spout onto the article or object to be sealed. The stopper, as before stated, may have a seal at one end of any character desired and is used to make an impression in the melted wax after it has been deposited on the article. A number of these stoppers may be employed, if desired, having different seals.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim is- 1. A sealing-tool comprising the fluid-recep tacle, the guideway above it formed with inclined flanges, the tongues at the front end of the receptacle forming a curved spout, and the burner-tubes, substantially as described.
2. In a sealing-tool, the combination, with the body, forming a fluid-receptacle, of the upwardly-extending inwardly-inclined sides, and the curved integral tongues forming a spout, and the burner-tubes located at 0ppo site sides of said spout, substantially as described.
3. In a sealing-tool, the combination, with the body portion comprising the bottom and the sides, the upper ends of which sides are bent inwardly to form a guideway for the sealing-wax, of the curved tongues having their ends connected together, the top having its ends bent at rightangles and one of said ends formed with a screw-threaded boss and the other end formed with a lug bent down to close the end of the liquid-receptacle, and the burner-tubes, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- IICSSGS.
