Description

w. a. BROOKS. Soldering-Machines.
Patented Dec. 8,1874
UNrrED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
I WILLIAM D. BROOKS, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGN OR TO MARY O.
BROOKS AND GEORGE D. BROOKS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SOLDERING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,575. dated December 8, 1874; application filed April 17, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. BROOKS, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Blow-Pipes or Gas-Blowers for S01- dering-Machines and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in whic Figure 1 of drawing represents a side view in vertical section of my improvement in gasblowers for soldering purposes. Fig. 2 is a horizontal cross-section of the same.
The invention relates to the method of applying a continuous flame along the whole seam on the top or side of can, so that the solder may be applied with economy, and the operation performed cheaply. In my patent granted September 24, 1872, I' applied a series of blow-pipes arranged in a circle to efl'ect the seaming of tops and caps of cans, and in a patent granted to me April 15, 1873, I ap plied a series of these pipes arranged side by side, to enable me to apply-a continuous flame along the side scam. I have now discovered an improvement upon the means in said patents, whereby the same idea may, perhaps, be carried out better and more effectually.
This consists in dispensing. with the pipes and converging the gas and air chambers, the one within the other, so that they will end in one circular or long continuous slot at the bottom.
In the drawing, A is the gas-chamber, and B the air-chamber, located one within the other, and intended to extend in this instance along a whole cap or top seam.
It will be perceived that these chambers receive, respectively, the gas and air, converge like a wedge toward the bottom, and discharge through long continuous slots at b. In case of a cap or top, of course these chambers would be circular and of dimensions corresponding to the size of the cans. They may be used instead of the series of pipes described and shown in the patent or application above referred to.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The air and gas chambers A B, made tapering toward the bottom, and discharging through a narrow continuous slot thereat, as and for the purpose described.
v WILLIAM D. BROOKS.
