Description

- I The truce;
FRANZ GJlTZSOHE, OF FREIBERG, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR T0 THE N. L.
' SYNDICATE, LIMITED, OF LONDON, EN GLAND.
COMPOSITION FOR MAKlNG ARTIFICIAL LEATHER FABRIC.
:EsPlLCIEFHJATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 6%2,319, dated January 30, 1900."
Application filed October 8,1898. Serial ITO-693,036. (No specimens.)
To etZZ whom it may concern:
Beitknown that I, FRANZ Gnrzsorin, asubject of the Emperor of Germany,and a resident of Freiberg, in the Kingdom of Saxony, Germany, have invented certain new and useful 1m provemeutsin Composition for Making Artificial Leather Fabric, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has for its object a new composition for making artificial leather fabric, which fabric shall be cheaper than ordinary leather, but yet equally serviceable for use in the manufacture of various articles-suoh, for instance, as driviug-helts.
The fabric consists in a strong felted material, preferably composed of hemp or of camels hair, which is treated with my new composition, consisting of a mixture of glue, Wax, oil, turpentine, and alcohol, as hereinutter specified.
In making the mixture the following proportions are preferred, though they may be varied somewhat, if desired: glue, one kilogram; was, one kilogram;- oil, one-half kilogram; turpentine, one-fourtl1 kilogram; alcohol, one-hall liter. glue is allowed to dissolve in thirty liters of Water during one and a half days. The was, oil, and turpentine are then added and the mixture is boiled. Finally when the whole has cooled off under continuous stirring the alcohol is added and the mass is stirred to insure a perfect dissolution and thorough combination of all theiugredients.
The felt is immersed in this mixture, heated to 80 ceutigrade, and is leftuntil it is thoroughly impregnated therewith. It is then passed betweenrollers to press, stretch, and dry it and is finally varnished or lacquered;
The product resembles ordmary leather and stretch.
The object of using the materials specified is as follows: The glue serves to produce an intimate combination of the separate mole cules. The wax (preferably beeswax) serves to make the material, and consequently the belt, 1nore pliable. The oil (preferably linseed-oil) serves. to protect the material against the influence of the atmosphere, more especially against humidity, rain, duo. The tur: pentiue serves to protect it against possible destruction by insects. The alcohol serves to dissolve theother ingredients.
. 4 1 is as strong as the latter and less liable to Having thus described my invention, What 5 5 I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat; out is--- a A: composition for making artificial leather fabric, consisting of a mixture of glue, one part; wax, one part; oil, one-half part; turpentiue, one-fourth part, and alcohol,'onehalfpart, as and for the purpose set forth.
Signed by me at Dresden, Saxony, this 19th day of September, 1898.
